Friday Gun Pr0n #238

Today's pic is something that's been seen before, but with an upgrade in glass:

G-d's Own Caliber, Redux

Savage model 10 bolt action rifle in G-d's Own Caliber (.308 Winchester). 24" heavy barrel, Choate riflestock, Timney trigger, and, new this week, Barska 6.5-20x50mm varmint/target scope. Picked it up on a whim from Amazon, of all places - at that priceI figured it could be a backup spotting scope if it didn't work out on the Savage.

I still need to get her sighted in; she came with a 3-10X BSA Cats' Eye scope that hadn't been sighted in. I have a 12.5-60X spotting scope (also by Barska) that I intend to use for that purpose, along with a LaserLyte boresight laser. My gun club's rifle range goes out to 150 yards, so if the Barska scope can pick up the target at that distance (meaning my old eyes can use the scope to pick the target up), she'll be set up at least that far. If I can get someone to host me at a club with longer range, I might stretch her legs and set it up for 200 yards or so.

In any case, there's some long range rifle shooting in my future - yippee!

That is all.

Nice. I've got the same rife, only with a less "evil" stock and the accutrigger. It's wearing a Leupold 6.5-20x50. I'm envious of the price on that Barska. Let's say the Leup was a little more painful...

Hmmm What club around here has a 200 yard range....

Just let me know and we'll go cut a hole in the ice.

I could stand to get a good battlefield zero on my FAL

Well, we have a 600 yard range at my club, but I haven't qualified to use it yet. Not sure I can see that far anyway.

jetfxr69,

I hope to someday be worthy of a Leupold... :)

The longest distance I've ever shot was 200 yards, and that was one time on a borrowed rifle (50 BMG, actually). Didn't even see where I hit, TBH. Since the Savage doesn't even have iron sights, I figured a rudimentary scope good for long(er) distances would let me know if it was worth springing the extra coin on a quality scope.

I've got a Barska on my VEPR, and so far, at the price point, I'm quite satisfied. It's on a side mount rail, and still has maintained zero after a couple range outings (granted, with a very low round count, maybe 30 rounds between the two - .308 is 'spensive!)

Weerd,

Heh. I'm not ashamed to say that was a thinly veiled beg for a distance range... :)

Let me get the scope sighted in for 100 yards at my club then we can move out to 200. I'll even bring a spotting scope!

libertyman,

When I get enough practice to even think about taking a shot at 600 yards, I'll be in touch.

Expect a call sometime around 2030... :D

Good luck seeing that boresight laser during the daytime. I find using it at dusk makes it easier. Unfortunately our range closes at sundown, and I'm a little skittish about pointing a rifle with a laser at the neighbor's shed. (Returned fire is a real risk in some neighborhoods. God Bless America!)

I just happened to think of something - traffic signs generally have a reflective coating. If there's a sign in view at a convenient distance, it'll make the laser easier to see.

Sight it in for 25 meters. Sounds crazy right? At 25 meters the bullet flight profile for a .308 is the same as 200 meters. It is called "Battle sight zero". At 25 it is on the was up and at 200 is on the way back down so points in between the sights will be high (up to about 2 inches), but the point of aim is the same. Works out the same for 5.56mm too, but at 25 and 300 meters. Appleseeders know these things.

Come on south for a visit. It doesn't get cold here for another month, and it probably never gets cold by your standards. I'll host you for a day at the range. And we can finally meet.

Dave H.,

My gun club doesn't allow shooting after dusk, but that's not to say that I couldn't sight the rifle in at dusk one day and then shoot it the next... Hmmm.

And I'd be *REAL* reluctant to be aiming a laser boresight attached to a rifle out-of-doors in MA. I'm thinking SWAT would be called... ;)

45ACP+P,

You're not the first person to mention that (sighting in at 25 yards/meters) - or trying an Appleseed (yes Ross...)

The only glitch I can see is the difference between 6.5X (lowest setting on the scope) which will be fine for 25 yards and 20X for the ~ 150 yards (back of rifle range). But that shouldn't vary all that much even on an entry level scope.

Right? ;)

ASM826,

I'd like that a lot. Someday I'd love to box up my 6-8 favorite guns and take a long road trip to visit folks. Hell, that'd be a good gunnie book right there...

Nice. I've added that scope to my Amazon Wish List for my Savage. I've been looking for something with a higher magnification than the scope it came with (which sounds like the same thing yours came with, btw - or at least an ancestor of it). Thanks for finding it!

Good timing, too. We should be getting our end of year bonuses in the next week or so!

The range I go to only goes out to 100 yards, though.

Shouldn't that be God's Own Rifle Caliber, New Testament? Some of us Old Testament types consider 30-06 to be the TRUE Revelation. ; )

Les,

Seeing as the .308 was derived from a shortened .30-06 case, I gotta go OLD TESTAMENT as well.

20X should take 600 yd. shots. (Says the guy who is legally blind.)
Is there a power line near by? Sure to be a 600 yd. LOS there.

You're gonna NEED to learn how to shoot at least 750 Jay; just sayin...

Take your kid to the Submarine History Museum in Groton...Ledyard is nearby and has a 500 yard range.

Plus, the museum is cool as hell.
If you get in touch with CCDL, I'm sure at least one of their people is a member of the Ledyard club and would be happy to take you. (also, try paul's pasta in Groton...I miss their Chicken Diablo something fierce! And their lobster ravioli...)

I was comparing a Barska spotting scope to a Bushnell at Gander Mountain the other day. When it came to image clarity, the Barska beat the Bushnell like a rented mule. I may have to take another look at Barska rifle scopes.
