Man shot dead in Pompano Beach appears to be case of self-defense
A father fatally shot a man in Pompano Beach after the man threatened his family, swinging a piece of wood at his wife and kids, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said. The shooting was still under investigation Monday.Gee, I dunno. Some deranged lunatic threatens my five year old kid, I shouldn't be able to just shoot him, right? Note to Senator Chuck the Schmuck: "Stand your ground" protects this guy just as much as it might protect George Zimmerman. This guy is the reason SYG was enacted - because without the protection afforded by SYG legislation, the dad in this case could face prosecution and/or civil liability because he refused to run away and leave his kids to face a club-wielding lunatic.
“At this point, all indications so far point to this man defending his family and defending himself,” BSO spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright said.
To be honest, I don't know that I would have shot the guy. Threatening my young kids with a blunt object? I'd be a lot more likely to go full blown berserker on the dude and just smear him into paste with the nearest heavy object - like an engine block or small motorcycle... Hell, I was changing a tire once when the car fell off the jack and trapped it under the car - it pissed me off so much I just lifted the car off the ground and retrieved the jack myself. I suspect the teenagers who slashed the tire witnessed the act, because my car was never touched again... But I digress...
More than likely the recently deceased had mental issues - folks don't normally attack random strangers and their kids with pieces of furniture unless their mental elevator is stuck between floors. While mental illness shouldn't be a death sentence, I'll reiterate that we don't have the "Nut-o-meter" that will distinguish between a truly dangerous psychopath, a nice guy who just went off his meds, or just random loonies. We don't have the luxury of guessing wrong, especially when our families are involved.

Or chemically-induced nuts. Several years ago a guy who'd been sampling PCP, LSD, and crack, decided to attack a church piano at a church in my hometown. It took four officers to subdue him, and he burned off the tranquilizers 20 minutes later in the ER and the docs had a real rodeo on their hands. I don't think he would have responded well to, "Sir, please leave my family alone," if he'd gone after a person instead of furniture. Not so sure about fleeing him, either.
