Woman Killed When Her Spouse Accidentally Shoots Cannon Into Their Home
POTRERO (CBS) — A woman was killed early Tuesday when her lover, who had allegedly been drinking, accidentally shot a homemade cannon into the couple’s home.Does the fact that a) it happened in a trailer park; b) they're not sure if it was her boyfriend or her husband; or c) the imbecile responsible had been drinking surprise anyone? I'm trying to figure out the "thought" process that went through this numbskull's head.
Homicide detectives with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the 38-year-old woman’s death, which took place in the 25000 block of Potrero Valley Road, near the California-Mexico border.
Step 1: Load cannon.
Step 2: Point cannon at house.
Step 3: Light cannon.
Step 4: [draws blank]
I mean, was it any surprise what would happen? Did he not think it would go off? Or was it one of those "oh, that'll never go through the wall, it'll just scare them" kind of things? It's hard to imagine that there was any kind of thought process here beyond "hey, hold mah beer and watch this sh*t!" I'm still curious how someone with such obvious mental deficiencies managed to get ahold of and properly load an actual cannon...
The other scary thing is that there were at least five adults and a four year old child living in one mobile home. Now, I've had some friends who owned mobile homes, and none of them were suited for more than three people - usually there's two bedrooms at best, and small bedrooms at that. So there's five adults and a child living in a domicile meant for three, tops.
It's a shame that someone lost their life over something so incredibly stupid and eminently preventable. A young girl grows up without her mom; her dad (if he is her dad) goes to jail for a long time, and they're more than likely going to be evicted from the trailer park. All because... well... That's what I'm trying to figure out. Cletus thought it would be funny to blow up his trailer?
If I'm laughing, it's only because the other options are crying and shrieking in terror at the fate of humanity...
That is all.

While I agree with most of the commentary, there are mobile homes available that have 3 or 4 bedrooms. In order for it to have that much space, it's usually a double wide. Basically, it's 2 trailers side-by-side with the interior open except for room or load-bearing walls.
I live in one, and so do several of my neighbours. Sure, most of the older ones (and the type that most people think of when you say "mobile home" or "trailor") are single-wides with 2, maybe 3 bedrooms and look like they're made of pine boards and scrap metal. A lot of the newer ones, you can't tell the difference from a site built home on private property. In fact, they have to meet the same safety codes and have for years.
Check out www.claytonhomes.com for examples of how they can look nowadays.
You got the manual of arms wrong.

Okay, after seeing photos of the residence, I take back my earlier comment about the home. That thing would be lucky to fit 3 people in any level of comfort.
That kinda behavior gives an honest redneck a bad name!
Now, where did I put that black powder and ramrod ...
My family at its peak had 5 of us (3 kids, 1 adult, and me) in a 3 bedroom single wide. It was snug but we did all right. We could conceivably fit 5 adults in there if it was two couples who could each share a bedroom and a single in the smallest bedroom.
But in the video report I saw of this story, the trailer they showed is actually a camper, probably a 28 footer. It looked to be in decent shape and had a bunch of solar panels on the roof.
According to the report the gun was apparently a home-made cannon packed with powder from fireworks. I don't think California requires a background check for that.
The last time I looked into it Dixie Gun Works sold cannons. They are treated as anyother black powder weapon, which you can buy and have mailed to you. I'm pretty sure even in MA. 'Cause really old weapons can't hurt anyone, right?

I wonder what the authorities would say if you built an onager, and had a handy stack of firepots made for ammunition...
Heck a ballista pointed at the front/back door would make one hell of a home defense against anyone trying to get in that way... (and I wouldn't want to be in the dyslexic SWAT team with the no-knock order for that raid).
