A Sad Addition...

Reader Harvey sends in the latest addition. I can't rejoice over this one.

Man killed in home invasion suffered mental illness
A woman shot and killed a man who police say had broke into her home early Saturday morning just outside of Gastonia.

A 911 call at 1:15 a.m. sent officers to the one-story home on Chapel Grove Road in reference to a breaking and entering in progress, according to Gaston County Police.
It's sad that it ended up like this, but the woman who defended herself had no idea what the mental state of the person trying to get into her house happened to be. All she could see was someone trying to gain access through the front door, being thwarted, then coming in through a back door. She couldn't know that he was confused rather than violent; all she knew was that there was someone in her home that didn't belong there. She acted to save her own life - unfortunately it meant she had to take measures that resulted in someone else losing theirs.

Dead Goblin Count: 260

That is all.

The walks-like-a-duck, quacks-like-a-duck theory in action.

While you may not be a duck, you're guilty of impersonating a duck in duck season.

Jay, I agree that the woman did the right thing in the circumstances, but I can't support this as a DGC entry unless and until it's proved the guy was indeed a goblin.

He's in her home, uninvited, with no way of her knowing what his intentions are.

That's a goblin in my book.

Well, your count, your rules, of course. I just have some difficulty in accepting that a mentally disturbed young man, who may have only been seriously confused, had any intent to commit a crime.

Maybe he did have intent. But based on what's in that article, I can't tell. So I, myself, speaking only for myself, am unconvinced he qualifies as a goblin.

She did the right thing. A terrible thing, but still the right thing.

Back in the 1950s my mother had a cousin who was . . . simple. And very big - John Robert was 6' 2" when he finally stopped growing. Sweet kid but never got mentally older than six years old, and he tended to roam and explore the neighborhood, visiting people. Aunt E and Uncle C finally had John Robert admitted to the State Home because they were terrified that he'd roam to far and someone, seeing a big stranger appear in their back door, would shoot him.
