Motel guest shoots, kills robbery suspect

HOUSTON - A man was killed as he tried to break into a room at a northwest Houston extended-stay motel Thursday night.

Houston police said the victim was inside a first-floor room at the Studio 6 Extended Stay on the Northwest Freeway and Rothway Street when he heard glass break. He grabbed his gun and shot the man trying to get inside, investigators said.

There's a picture at the link; it was a first floor motel room. I hate first floor rooms, and will try to switch if at all possible - for just this reason. It's far too easy for someone to just heave a rock through the window and have access to all your stuff. Second floor, they at least have to hump it up a flight of stairs and back down, and goblins are by nature lazy - why climb stairs when there's a perfectly good first floor available.

Also, by going after travelers the goblins are choosing folks who are already a little behind the 8 ball - they're in unfamiliar territory and may let their guard down involuntarily just from being out of their element. There's also the reasonable suspicion that - because of our crazy patchwork of firearm and self-defense laws - that the potential victim will be unarmed or at least not as well armed as they could be. Fortunately, in this case, our traveler had all the tools needed to provide for his own safety.

And once more, with feeling: Don't want to get shot dead? Don't come crashing through a strange window in the middle of the night - it's just that easy!
