Suspect in hit-and-run that killed expectant couple has DWI, manslaughter past
Police say the suspect in a horrific hit-and-run crash that killed a young New York couple and their baby served time for manslaughter and was charged with DWI just last month.
Authorities are still searching for 44-year-old Julio Acevedo, who police say ran away from the crash that killed Nachman and Raizy Glauber, both 21, and their son, who died at a hospital after being delivered by caesarean section.
Ten Eight year jail sentence for manslaughter. A OUI conviction just a month prior. And here he is barreling down a residential street at twice the speed limit and then leaves the scene of an accident where the engine was sheared from it's mount and thrown into the backseat. Oh, yeah, he wasn't drunk or anything this time. The car - a BMW, mind you, being driven by someone in public housing - was obtained by extra-legal means - it appears as though a third party leased it and was letting Acevedo drive it. When will we end the car show loophole?
More than
ten thousand people a year lose their lives to drunk drivers. Ten thousand deaths a year that are entirely preventable. We have gun control proposals all over the United States based on a handful of mass shootings over a number of years - tragedies all, of course, but not even on the radar in terms of overall deaths. You have an infinitesimally small number of unstable people misusing firearms compared to thousands of people misusing alcohol, and yet there are no new alcohol prohibitions in the works.
And, of course, there's the
10 8 year sentence for manslaughter. From all reports, the person killed was gunned down while sitting on a doorstep. It's hard to see how multiple gunshots to a stationary target could be boiled down to manslaughter, but at that, 8 years? Lest we be accused of yet again beating a dead horse, I'd like to point out that 8 years is less of a sentence than New York's new penalty for putting 8 rounds in a 10 round magazine.
Yeah, we have our priorities straight all right...

You could not be more correct. A few days ago was a multi-victim shooting in Switzerland. Think the Swiss are going after the guns? Nope. . . they're trying to understand why an already prohibited person had access to firearems and are looking to further tighten access for already prohibited folks. But no . . . the evil Swiss gun shot those people by itself and needs to be stopped cold.
I wonder how many people are aware that overdoses of Tylenol killed more people last year than were killed by murderers with rifles?
Well in New York you can now have a 1911 .45 Auto with a standard 7-round magazine and be perfectly legal, but if you have that same pistol with a "high capacity" 8-round magazine (like my Colt Double Eagle) you have committed a crime because you have a "banned" firearm.
In New York you can order a delivery pizza with a 20-ounce bottle of Coca-Cola and be legal, but if you order a pizza and have a 2-liter bottle of Coca-Cola delivered with it you have committed a crime because you bought a "high capacity" soda.
MADD isn't mad enough, or they would work harder on laws like this and politicians aren't real keen on locking anyone up long term for manslaughter (manslaughter with a DUI should be 35-years fixed minimum) with a alcohol violation as alcohol is their one of their tax cash cows. Going after that cow would be madness.
Does any of this make sense? NO! It is the way politicians think though.

Because oppressing, enslaving, terrorizing and exterminating people who have guns is really hard.

Live in Chicago, the anti-gun capital of the country. In the first two months of 2013, approximately the same number of people were killed in auto accidents than in all the gun related deaths in the city in 2012. Please explain to me how I'm safer on the roads than when my neighbors have a gun?
