Friday Gun Pr0n #24

I'm hoping that today's gun pic will act as a harbinger...

This is a Winchester Model 1906 pump-action .22 rifle. It's got a tubular magazine that holds 11 rounds of .22LR or 15 rounds of .22 shorts (I think; I've never fired anything but .22LR through it).

It's got no bluing left anywhere; the wood could use some serious refinishing/replacing; it has no butt pad; and one of the past owners scratched her name and town into the sideplate with what appears to be a chisel.

And I wouldn't have it any other way. Damnedest thing, too - it shoots like a dream. Even fooling around I can hit a 1" target at 50' all day long, and I'm no rifleman by anyone's standards...

That's slick, dude!

I've got a hand-me-down Winchester Model 77 Clip-fed .22LR that I have had for around fifteen years and HAVE NEVER FIRED. I know, shame on me.

I did acquire (thanks to my brother) a difficult to locate reprint of the original manual so I could pull it apart without flinging gun all over the kitchen. That manual was a sign of better times, too. It was a tri-fold brochure, full of how-to instead of Warning: notices.

Maybe it's time to take it down to the range for some action. Thanks, Jay.

I need a camera! D'oh!

West, By God said...

There's something about the character of beat-up old guns that I love. My dad's old single-shot .22 (made in the 30s) is beat up, covered in stickers (no clue) and has screws that need tightened from time to time. But it shoots straight!

That's also why I love milsurps... good guns, lots of character. I've seen a lot of SKSs with neat designs carved into them. It makes every one of them unique.

My Grandfather had that very model. When Dear Old Dad got it, I learned to shoot with it.

Like yours, there's no blueing left on it. The wood is old and patina'd (sp?), and the spring in the magazine is old and worn. But it's still a tac driver.

Someday, I hope my daughter will shoot that rifle.

Man, I really need to get out to the range.

tweaker,

I've never heard of a .22LR rifle that used stripper clips. {/nitpick} :)

Seriously, though, give that Winchester a good cleaning & oiling and git 'er to the range! I have a Remington Nylon 66 that I need to put back together and put up as a Friday pic... That is but one of my winter projects...

west,

You got it. I can appreciate the utility of a plastic-stocked rifle with a sterile stainless barrel, but when it comes to character, there's no beating blue steel & wood...

Greg,

I'm hoping to start my son on shooting next spring. This will be the second gun he shoots - the first is a single-shot that's basically break-proof. Once I can take him with me (assuming he likes it, of course), I'll get more range time - the old "divide and conquer" approach where we separate the children for more family harmony... :)

What are you waiting for? Get to the range! :)

I have one of those also that belonged to my dad when he was a kid; it is one of the most accurate 22 rifles that I have ever shot.

Got the same gun. Just went shooting with it last week. It is also beat up, but works perfectly.

I still have the butt-plate, it's broken but still attached.

J,
She been cleaned since the last time you & I had a range trip? [/snark]

I would have got one of those, but they cost an arm & leg round these here parts.

So I got a Taurus Mod 62, and my very first range session, blew away 300 rounds.

I have hit tin cans at 200 yards with mine -- and it's got the shorter barrel (18") than yours.

The pump .22 rifle is Vulcan's way of making us shooters smile.

Eleven rounds? Careful, that's an assault weapon!

That looks a lot my my old Stevens Visible Loader that I had to rechamber from shooting too many shorts through. But that was a sweet shooting little rifle. 1/2 inch 18 round groups open sights, at 50 feet. I wish I still had it.. :(

Good nitpick, I'll give you that. However, that detachable-box magazine-fed rifle is actually (or was at the time and it stuck) referred to as "Clip Fed." I thought the same thing initially, but that's how the gun shows up. Weird.

And you're right. Time to lube it up and haul it to the range. I've only got 525 rounds of Remington Golden Bullet. Maybe I could use that...

:)
