What Ammo Shortage?

There's a lot of talk about the ongoing ammo shortage. Folks are talking about how hard it is to find ammunition in any of the popular calibers, particularly 9mm, .45 ACP, and 5.56mm.

Which is why, when Dad G. called me up and asked "You got a .357 Magnum?", I was intrigued - I thought he needed to borrow a wheelgun, and was starting to think which one to lend. Instead, he hands me this:

SCORE!

Yep, just got 200 rounds of Federal .38 Special +P JHPs, gratis. And one round of Hydra-Shok .45 ACP (No, I don't know why...). Seems Dad was asked to be the RO for the county jail's annual quals, and they gave Dad the leftover ammo. Since his only .38 Special is a 40+ year old model 36 - not rated for +P ammo - I benefit...

That's twice now I've been the windshield rather than the bug...

That is all.

I wonder if that's the one round from gunbroker...

Damn, Anonymous beat me to the joke.

No, the Gunbroker .45 ACP was a FMJ.

I thought of that...

Careful, now, with an attitude like that, it is bound to catch up with you ;).

My Walmart actually had a couple of the 100-round WWB .38s the other day. I left them on the shelf, since that's one I handload.

I have dies for my .380 now, though ... just have to find brass and primers and powder and bullets... Hmmm... :)

OT, and shameless whoring: http://zercool.blogspot.com/2009/05/gun-porn-and-range-report.html

(Update your blogroll pretty please?)

Zercool,

You got it. I'll put on Friday's afternoon blogroll extravaganza...

Well well well.

The Snubbie From Hell (tm) should be well fed for quite some time to come. Well fed, indeed.

The gunbroker one that the guy wanted $1200 for as a starting bid. That was hilarious.

I scored today too, Jay!! I picked up 500 rounds of PMC manufactured .45ACP from my local gun guy for $18.95 a box, which came out to $205 and change.

On top of that, I go to pay my rent today and my landlord would NOT take it, until I insisted. Then he just takes slightly less than half of what my rent is and hands me back the rest. Tells me as long as I live here, I won't have to worry about the rent if I don't have a job. GOD, I LOVE MY LANDLORD!! And twice in one day, I'm the windshield too!!!

Brad,

I was thinking these would be perfect for the S&W Model 19, actually. They *would* be excellent practice ammo for the SfH, though...

Old NFO,

I wish I could. Between the lousy weather we're having and the general crazy crush of life, range time has been few and far between.

This weekend, to be sure - at the very, very least I'm going to get the Colt New Frontier out for a proper Range Report. Promise.

OrangeNeck,

That's excellent news! It's good to know that there are still good and honorable people in this world, and that good things do still happen to good people...

Add me to your Christmas list, I'm still finding it scarce.

I gave all my friends a couple boxes of .223 for Christmas with homemade cookies.

Can't read the boxes. What kind of bullet rides in those +P cases?

Heh you can use the .45 for your "Barney" round for your Glock!

Brigid,

In today's ammo marketplace, that's one helluva Xmas gift!

Especially with your cookies... :)

Weer'd,

They're 125 grain +P .38 Specials. 200 of 'em... Dad figures it makes up for the box of 50 .380 ACP FMJs I gave him last week.

Given that I paid like $8 at the time for the .380s, I'd agree...

Jay,
This may be a stupid question, but other than the fact that the 200 rounds were FREE, why would you practice with what is arguably 'carry' ammunition? You seem to be able to score .38spc wadcutter reloads (practice ammo) pretty easily these days. Mind you, I'm not criticizing . . only asking. Inquiring minds want to know.

Brad,

I always practice with carry ammo. Even with revolvers.

It's always a good idea to test the rounds you're staking your life on...

I just don't practice with carry ammo anywhere near as much as with FMJ or LSWC...
