Wish List, Updated...

I figured it was about time to update the ol' firearms wish list. Got the latest copy of Guns I Can't Afford last night, and smack dab on the cover is that right-sexy SigSauer P238, the new/old/retro Mustang/Pocketlite 1911-style .380 ACP pocket pistol. I mentioned my strong lust for the P238 after Caleb reported on it after Shot Show, and seeing it again got me to thinkin' about other guns on the "DO WANT" list...

Longarms:

M1 Garand
Ruger 10/22
.308 bolt-action (Remington 700)
Mauser K-98
Marlin 1894 in .357 Magnum
SAR-1 / WASR-10 AK-47 clone

Shotguns:

Saiga-12
Remington 870 in 20 gauge
Mossberg 500 w/pistol grip

Handguns:

Smith & Wesson model 442 (.38 Special)
Smith & Wesson model 34 (.22LR)
Walther PPS (.40 S&W)
SigSauer P238 (.380ACP)
SigSauer P239 (.40 S&W)
Ruger Mk III (.22LR)

Notice a certain practicality to this list... I'm deliberately avoiding guns that are too expensive (everything by HK; Colt Python; etc.); outrageously overpriced for MA (Glocks, Kahrs); or simply too expensive to shoot (S&W Model 500; Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan; etc). This list is guns that I might conceivably purchase in the near- or not-so-near future, not my "what would I get if I hit the lottery" list. I could definitely see buying at least one or two of the guns listed above sometime in the next 12 months.

What's on your list of acquisitions to make in the near future?

That is all.

I have some similar wants, and have the Garand on its way from CMP.

Agreed - I want a Garand just for the sheer patriotism of it.

I'd like a baseline GI 1911 for similar reasons.

The Mark III or a Buckmark Hunter for the economic fun.

Those Sigs look to be uberfine too...

I share your lust for the P238, big time. I'd save up and take the plunge... but I'll have to see .380 prices come back down to some reasonable level first. I'd hate to get the gun and then never be able to shoot it 'cuz I couldn't find/afford ammo for it :)

Yes, the .380 reveals itself to be a stumbling block to any future purchase. All the gun people denigrate its capabilities, but it turns out everyone has one! And they bought all the ammo for their guns and now we can't find it except at high prices if at all.

Youse gots some overlap with stuff that used to be on my list and now already have...

If you feel the need for a 1911-based .380, you shold try to find yourself a Star.380. They were issued in the Spanish Air Force and a few police-types.

Just visualize a 2/3rds scale 1911 that holds ten rounds and without the grip safety.

And most of them were fired very little.

libertyman,

You realize you are directly responsible for the Mossberg on the list, right? :)

I've seen them at gun shows for like $150 with the pistol grip. I figure an 18" barrel is non-NFA but close enough, and enables me to scratch the itch without finding an FFL who can handle the transfer or jumping through additional hoops.

Once I move to NH, though...

Bgg,

That's just about exactly my reasons for getting a Garand, actually.

The Mark III is actually for taking new shooters to the range - my S&W model 422 is fun but a little on the finicky side.

Paladin,

I've got a pretty sizable store of .380ACP, given that I have three guns currently in that chambering, one of which is a carry gun. And 7 rounds at a time (especially considering how freakin' expensive Sig mags are!) will make it last pretty long...

T-bolt,

Heh. Imagine that... ;)

emdfl,

Problem is, you can't find a Star in MA, and no FFL will transfer one. The special MAhole price would most likely be higher than a new Sig...

I'm assuming, that is, that the Sig becomes MA-approved. SigSauer's been pretty good about getting their guns on the MA roster and through the approval process.

I've been kind of obsessed all summer with a pocket pistol of the P3AT or LCP variety. Much like other folks commenting - the price of .380 ammo in both practice and self-defense types has kept me from making the purchase.

That and I spent all of my gun money on a S&W 63 and a Kimber .22 conversion kit. No cash=no pocket pistol.

With the weather changing and my carry options improving I'll probably be able to make it to spring before the IWANT factor kicks in again.

Do you own a Sig P228 Jay? If not you need one.

Jay, do you have a C&R FFL? If so, some of the spanish star 380s are C&R eligible.

I need to revise (and post) my wishlist. I have the Mossberg with the pistol grip. Took the pistol grip off and put a collapsible recoil-reducing stock on it. I might be able to be talked out of the pistol grip. I'm not going to use it.

My next gun purchases will be a good .22 rifle; a 10/22 is one of the guns I'm considering. I'm also leaning toward Henry's .22 levergun as an alternative, and I really would like to have a CZ 452 Lux (.22 bolt-action with a Mannlicher-style stock) as well.

After that is a good lever-action in either .357 or .44. I've already got Ruger Blackhawks in both calibers, and I'd like at least one of them to have a companion long-gun. Just because.

LONG ARMS
M1 Garand (who am I to argue with 3 uncles and father-in-law?)
G98 of WWI vintage (to go with the original 98 bayonet my Grandfather brought back from the trenches)
Savage 110 in .308

SHOTGUNS
I've an 870 and a Belgium made Auto-5. How can I improve on that without winning the lottery?

HANDGUNS
Ruger Security-Six (never should have sold the one I carried)
One each of a Colt and S&W M-1917
Colt New Service in .45LC

- M1 Garand
- .20 guage coach gun
- CETME
- and just creeping up into my radar recently because of ammo prices, some sort of SA .22 revolver.
- 1911 of some sort, as unfancy as possible.

I would look for a used Ruger MK II instead of a MK III.

Or Better yet a MK II 22/45.

Well, one that was pretty far down on my list (because I already own one) will probably become a reality in the near future. I have a remington 1100 that I totally love, but wish it was left handed (when it comes to gun nuttery, it sucks to be a southpaw). Well, I had dinner last night with a guy who probably knows more about 1100s then anyone left at remington, and mentioned this to him in passing. Turns out he has a nice left-handed 1100 he's willing to part with. Surprised me since he's riight-handed! I just asked him to keep an ear out for one.

I concur with Mad Saint Jack, get a Mk II if you can find one. The magazine safety and loaded chamber indicator on the Mk III's are worthless PIA's.

Bruce B. said...

I should add that I speak from personal experience. I owned a Mk II target model that I sold when I was laid off. I now own a Mk III and wish I had found another Mk II.

I would hold off on the P238 for a bit, Sig's been having some QC problems lately.

The loaded chamber indicators and mag safety on the MKIII are pretty easy to remove. The mag safety cost me all of two washers and about 10 minutes to remove.

My personal favorite would be a Browning BDA (.380), nickel finish!
