(CNN) -- Rhode Island Congressman Patrick Kennedy, a Democrat, is not running for re-election, he said Thursday in a video to his constituents. It's not just that Patches is finally getting the hell out of politics, although that is a pretty big step - this is the last of the Kennedys in office, IIRC (well, not counting Mr. Shriver in CA there...) If Patrick Kennedy, son of Ted Kennedy, doesn't think he can be re-elected in a liberal New England state, well, then, doesn't that tell you something right there? Because let's be honest here. Patches was a lifer - right up until Scott Brown rode the anti-Ă˜bamacare wave into office. If there's one thing Kennedys do extremely well it's read the political winds...
"Having spent two decades in politics, my life is taking a new direction, and I will not be a candidate for reelection this year," he said. "Going forward, I will continue many of the fights we've waged together, particularly on behalf of those suffering from depression, addiction, autism and post-traumatic stress disorder.
We may not have to vote them out after all - they may all "retire"!
That is all.
UPDATE: Fellow New Englandah Jay Tea says it better than I can.

I guess "the joke" is on him!
It's a really bad sign for the Democrats if a once "safe" seat, a "Kennedy" seat no less, is so vulnerable in Rhode Island. The late John Murtha's seat could go to a Republican too.
call me a pessimist or a realist... but i smell a rat. he's up to something fishy. that patches. he totally is.
i don't have a good feeling about him doing this. i think he'll move to hyannis and then pull a brett favre and unretire and announce he's running against brown.
he's a weasel. a sleepy, drunken weasel.
He's probably making enough money off of his "free oil" NGO that he figures he does need to run up his government pension any higher.
