Our lack of attention is killing the oceans
Editor's note: June 8 is World Oceans Day. Chevy Chase is a comedian and actor. A lifelong environmentalist and activist, he's been seen lately in the film "Hot Tub Time Machine" and on the NBC sitcom "Community." Jayni Chase is the founder of the Center for Environmental Education, which provides K-12 teachers and students with environmental education materials and support. She's the author of "Blueprint for a Green School" (2005). TED, a nonprofit organization devoted to "Ideas Worth Spreading," hosts talks on many subjects and makes them available through its website.

First James Cameron is an expert on capping underseas oil wells, now Chevy Chase is an expert on marine biology? Last I checked, Chase's brilliant work in such luminary films as "Goose on the Loose" and "Cops and Robbersons" may have won him international acclaim for his acting prowess, but have given precious little insight as to the complexities of the marine ecosystem. Now, had he voiced the turtle Crush in "Finding Nemo", he might have some chops here...

I guess it's only a matter of time before we see Tim Allen voicing his opinion on the Middle East or Jack Black's view on international border disputes...

That is all.

Being an actor doesn't make Chevy Chase an expert on anything except acting.

However, it's possible to self-educate into experthood -- a certain "dad, gun nut, motorhead, shaved-head biker with a foul mouth and a bad attitude" who is certainly an expert on guns comes to mind. ;-)

In any case, expert or not, this time Chase is right. The oceans, and the things that live in them, are indeed in trouble, and it's largely because of human stupidity. I don't know much about things like coral bleaching, and I don't think anybody else does either, but anybody who pays any attention to the fishing industry knows that fish stocks are crashing all over the world, and some species may be too far gone to recover. They aren't in imminent danger of extinction ... yet ... but they may never be a commercially-exploitable resource again.

At least James Cameron has a lot of experience with submersible vehicles, and well, that's the only way to interact with the oilwell(albeit unmanned submersibles).

... Now Chevy Chase... wiki says he studied pre-med and then graduated with a bachelor in english.
