For Obamas, a vacation on island that’s seen it all
BAR HARBOR, Maine — Residents of this Down East retreat of granite mountains, fragrant forests, and fog-veiled ocean inlets prefer to respect the privacy of its many well-heeled residents and visitors. And they take pride in not losing their heads over the A-list celebrities who shop their stores, dine in their restaurants, and hike their trails.

So when President Obama arrives on Mount Desert Island today for a weekend family vacation, he can expect a reception as cool as the light salt breeze that wafts over Frenchman’s Bay. And that should suit Obama just fine. The president guards his family’s privacy jealously during personal down time. No public events are scheduled; the White House has said only that the Obamas will be spending a lot of time outdoors and doing some hiking.

"President Øbama, can you tell us exactly what it is that makes you so awesomely awesome?"

I'm surprised that's not part of the article. I hesitate to call this a "puff piece" - because even puff pieces are harder hitting than this miserable bit of propaganda masquerading as "news". We find out that the Øbamas are "well-heeled residents and visitors" and "A-list celebrities "; we get quotes such as this: “I would tell him he’s better than Bush,’’ (he's been out of office for nearly two years now, schmuck) just for the obligatory Bush-bashing.

The only consolation is that Øbama isn't in DC - it means that, at least for the weekend, he can't fuck things up any worse...

That is all.

On her first trip to the Gulf Coast since the BP oil spill, First Lady Michelle Obama encouraged Americans to consider vacationing on the region’s beaches that have not been directly impacted by oil.

As Obama put it, visitors should not hesitate to travel to the Gulf Coast, "because if people want to know what can they do to help folks down here, one of the best ways to help is to come down here and enjoy the outstanding hospitality."

Can we also update the definition of hypocrite?

If he wasn't a completely hypocritical bag o' crap, he'd vacation on the Gulf Coast. Then again, if he wasn't a completely hypocritical POC, he wouldn't be President.

MDI is knee deep with secure private Family Compounds of the Rich and Famous "Old Yankee Money Families" ....and yet, somehow, Obambi is staying in a Bar Harbor Hotel, like all the ordinary people do.

.... I guess no one wanted to extend an invatation ....or give up some of their own time on the Island.

I guess even being President only gets you so far.....

Err..vacation? In this economy? Oh, sure, I do know folks who're doing the Disneyland/Disney World thing, but I also know lots of folks who're staying at home or very close to it.

Apparently, that doesn't include Obama. Didn't he say that he wouldn't rest until the BP oil spill mess was resolved?

I'm very happy he did not come to the Gulf.
