The Rest... of the Story.

Merlin sends me a link with more information on this story I brought to you last week.

Letters bearing Eddie Bernice Johnson's signature ask that scholarship money be sent directly to her grandsons

WASHINGTON – Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson apparently asked the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation to send scholarship funds directly to her grandsons and great-nephews, rather than to their colleges, according to letters released today by her GOP challenger.

It is unclear whether such a request is, by itself, improper under the foundation's rules.

Riiiiiight. Hey, I'm certain that Johnson being a TX legislator had nothing to do with the scholarship award, right? So what difference does it make whether it goes to some silly ol' college or just straight to the relatives of the high-ranking public official! I mean, c'mon! It's not like Johnson tried to play hide-the-sausage in a mens room in an airport, right? 'Cuz that would TOTALLY be big news, not some silly story about misdirected scholarship money. That's boring ol' theft right there.

Nothing to see here, folks; the line for the circus forms over that way...

That is all.

Technically, Bernice is right. The award recipients had to attest that they were not related to anybody on the CBC, so she is throwing her own kin under the bus. It is a light bus, however, since there are no criminal or civil penalties for lying on the form. They just won't get the scholarship, which they ain't getting anyway. Sad but true.

What's also funny is that she originally claimed that the only reason the cash went to relatives of her and her assistant, was that there were NO OTHER QUALIFIED APPLICANTS in her district. Then later, qualified applicants surfaced who had recieved denial letters from Johnson's office stating that they were denied because there were so many other qualified applicants that there wasn't enough scholarship money to go around.

Oops.

What's sad, though, is that this mess will most likely make absolutely no difference in whether she gets elected or not. Her supporters are so focused on what she has gotten them in the past, and potentially will get them in the future, that they are more than willing to overlook these kinds of shenanigans. It's very hard to pass up free stuff paid for by other people's money once you're on the tit.

Local radio has been full of the story over the past weeks here, and that's the general jist of caller comments from her voting block. Failing something illegal that gets her jail time, she's pretty well entrenched... and even then I wouldn't really be surprised if she were re-elected wearing prison stripes.

Just remember, This is the same Congressional Black Caucus Foundation that GM recently started making donations to - with our tax dollars.
