New Castle councilman calls cops on boys' cupcake sale
NEW CASTLE — When Andrew DeMarchis and Kevin Graff, two 13-year-olds from Chappaqua's Seven Bridges Middle School, set up shop at Gedney Park on a fall weekend last month, they were expecting a tidy profit.
Instead, the two wannabe entrepreneurs selling cupcakes, cookies, brownies and Rice Krispie treats baked by them for $1 apiece got a taste of cold, hard bureaucracy .
Yet again, we have another story where officers of the law, doing their sworn duty on behalf of the town elders, thwart the dastardly plans of {gasp} EEEVVVVILLLL capitalists. Now, granted, it probably would have been a good idea for the boys to look into whether they needed a permit - or at least permission - to sell goods on town property. In this day and age, the town wants to control who can and cannot set up shop (and, naturally, get their cut of the action - the permit fees "rang[e] from $150 to $350 per two hours"!!!)
Here's the kicker:
New Castle Councilman Michael Wolfensohn came upon the sale and called the cops on the kids for operating without a license.
Nice. I hope he feels good about himself; after all, he did save his beloved city from the scourge of teenaged baked goods vendors. He claims he wasn't certain he was "allowed" to tell the boys they needed a permit - if you believe that, there's a bridge in another part of his state I'll sell you cheap. It's simply amazing that he didn't just approach the boys and let them know they needed a permit - now, if he were to come back the next day and they were still there sans permit, that becomes a different story. Maybe he feels the best use of the town's police officers is evicting 13 year olds from the town park for committing the unspeakable crime of trying to make a few bucks.
Or maybe he's just a petty tyrant who gets off on hassling people - maybe he ought to get a job with the TSA?
That is all.

Them dad gummed kids today what with their twittbook 'n shaggy hair.
When I was a kid, well, more of a kid, I was selling lemonade to cops, sans permit.
What next, they boot the Boy Scouts from their popcorn stand? Confiscate all of the Girl Scouts' delicious samoas?
You know what? Tar and feathers. For real. Play time with the petty tyrants needs to come to an end. If it's not TSA wanting to sexually assault you it's some mafioso pissed he's not getting his cut from a kids bake sale.
This stuff is getting infuriating. The .gov is starting to radicalize the wrong people. People who pay taxes and vote. Unlike the unwashed professional protesters, we'll demand action and follow through if we don't get it.
He has erected a multitude of new offices, and sent hither swarms of officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance.
