Ask And Ye Shall Receive...

A while back I commented on the ShotLock, a new device on the market made to secure a single shotgun. I'd seen it advertised in the NRA magazine, and it was sufficiently intriguing that I started sniffing around seeing if anyone had any experience with it. Well, a little over a week ago I got an e-mail from the designer of the ShotLock:
Jay, I am a regular reader and the designer of the shotlock. I have convinced my sales manager to send you a sample of the shotlock.

All I need is an address to ship it to.

Thanks,
Max
A week later this shows up on my front porch:

ShotLock

I opened the box and found the unit:

Simplicity Indeed

As well as a special present:

A Very Gunnie Christmas

(I actually got the 1911 and another ornament to be shown later; this picture is just a sample of what they can do in Max's shop).

The ShotLock has a lot of promise - it can be configured for a wide variety of different shotguns, can open either R-L or L-R, and covers the receiver and trigger group. It meets CA safe storage requirements, which should be sufficient for other areas (MA, I'm looking at yoooouuu), but Max did caution me that, while the ShotLock might prevent opportunistic theft, it is not a safe and should not be construed as one. It's intent is to prevent unauthorized access to the shotgun, not to prevent the shotgun from being stolen.

I want to get the ShotLock installed, either in the MBR closet or the stairs going into the basement, and then give a more detailed review at that point. Looking at the unit out of the box, it's solidly constructed, and the locking mechanism is simple to operate with minimal instruction. Once I have it configured for my Mossberg (with bayonet attached, of course), I'll see if I can't get a quick video if it in action. I'm curious to see how hard it is to get everything together (doesn't look too bad); actually getting it screwed to the wall should be easy.

Stay tuned for more review.

That is all.

This looks like it could be ideal to keep my grandchild and guest's children from the weapon, while keeping it reasonably accessible. I'll need to check it out...

Jay, you have kids. How about an "is it kid proof" review?

It should meet MA's "safe storage" requirements... but does it actually meet them? I'm guessing you're well aware of how irrational such laws can be.

What are the storage requirements in MA, anyway? Not that I have to deal with such things since I live in a free state, but I am curious.

Damn it, Max.... why do you not frequent my blog!

:)

In all seriousness... I am very interested in reading what you have to say about this do-hickie. I am a big fan of quick access gun boxes... I have small kids in the house, and its really the only way.

awesome. I can't wait for the review. I've had my eye on those for a bit myself.
