For A Friend...

Robb Allen, someone over the years I've come to know, respect, and call friend, has asked for assistance in publicizing work being done by Florida Carry, Inc.

He's put up this post in support of allowing open carry to be legalized in Florida.

I've generally avoided the open carry debate, being as how I live in MA, where you can lose your permit to own firearms over something you wrote on the internet. Open carry is technically legal here, in that there are no specific laws criminalizing the open carriage of arms by legally permitted persons. It's generally agreed that one's tenure as an open carry participant in MA would be short-lived, as there are a myriad of charges one could potentially face in MA - and even if no charges were filed, your local licensing authority may very well declare you to be unsuitable and yank your permit - like what happened to TJIC. No jury needed.

My thoughts are simple: open carry should be legal in all 50 states. Then again, concealed carry should be legal in all 50 states. No permit should be needed to exercise one's constitutionally enumerated right, period. From a practical standpoint, there's simply no reason for either permit - the state is relying on the individual gun owner to remain law abiding and not carry if they don't authorize a permit. Only those that obey the law are going to continue to do so - those that break the law aren't going to care. Requiring a permit is merely a revenue stream and nothing else.

As for the actual practice of open carry? Taking all social nuances out of the equation, I'd prefer to open carry - it's a royal PITA to try to stuff a handgun into your waistband and keep it hidden. Open carry means greater options in what you can carry and how, and removes the worry from "printing" or inadvertent flashing should one bend the wrong way. It's simply unfathomable that OC should be illegal in a state that does not forbid concealed carry - it's like the state is saying "we know you can handle it, but don't scare the sheep". There's simply no valid reason to prevent either concealed or open carry - it's only going to affect those that aren't going to break the law in the first place.

Anyways, go read Robb's post, and if you're in FL, write your congresscritter about open carry in the Sunshine state...

That is all.

Shucks, I'll go you one better... I think we should be able to buy our guns through mail order from Sears again.

Criminals seem to get them without much more effort than that, and the law abiding will use them the same way no matter what. Honestly, people like you or Breda are going to behave the same with your firearm even if there's NO laws governing them on the books, because it's just polite and smart. Name me one law that if repealed would change the way you behave with a gun. I'm not talking about open vs. concealed, but things like background checks, magazine restrictions, assault weapons bans, etc.

Open Carry, Concealed Carry, Guns in the Rifle Rack in the Pickup, I'm in favor of them all. I think we should follow the advice of Unc, Breda, Joe Huffman and other that have been posted about it: Just Don't be A Dick.
