A Different Model 10
That's a Savage Model 10 in G-d's Own Caliber (New Testament, .308 Winchester). It's got a 24" heavy barrel, a Butler Creek sling, Barska 2.5-10X scope, and a Harris ultralight bipod (model LM from MidwayUSA, literally arrived last night). This model predates the AccuTrigger, but the guy I got it from swapped the Savage factory trigger for a Timney trigger, and whatever he paid for the Timney wasn't enough. The trigger breaks clean and unexpectedly with a bare minimum of effort - something tells me this is going to be a supremely accurate rifle.
The scope was a foregone conclusion (it came with a BSA Cat's Eye 3-9X scope without any rings, so the Barska was attached in the interim). Once the rifle range thaws I'm bringing her, the Barska spotting scope, and the LaserLyte Boresighter for some intense zeroing in time (and, not coincidentally, will get a range report and two Product Reviews out of one range session). I'll need to get some quality .308 Winchester for the task, of course, and I'll probably get it sighted in for 100 yards. I've got a few additional tweaks and changes in mind (hint: it's a bolt action rifle and therefore not subject to the MA AWB), so I expect this will show up in different guise down the road.
Oh, and please note the new MArooned header pic...
That is all.

Excellent! You will love it. I have the Savage 110FP. Sighted in at 2 inches high at 100 yards. I got a deer with it once at 457 yards!
Enjoy it!

Wow. You got yourself a jen-yoo-wine sniper rifle there son. Does it shoot down jets taking off from Logan? Glad to see you're keeping up the tradition of scaring the anti's.

You are really going to enjoy that rifle. I had one for a few years and it went bye-bye last year after our finances took a huge hit, but there will be another here some day.
There are indeed a slew of options for that rifle - you will probably first off want a new, better quality stock. Get yourself some good dies, too.
Oh boy, you are going to have fun with that! Enjoy!
VERY nice. Also of note, Nosler is doing a "buy two, get one free" promo on some of their ammo, including a couple flavors of .308.

Damn. I thought for sure it was going to be a .50 cal Barrett. No prizes for me. Again.
Ooooohhhhhhh!
Evil Black Rifle! Does it have the shoulder thing that goes up?
Seriously though, that's a drool-worthy setup. In .308, you'll have so many choices as to bullets, powders and loadings, that you'll never be able to try 'em all.
Can't wait to see some pictures of dime-sized groups from that one!

Nice! Savages are good rifles. I know I like the 110 that I got last year - I just need to get it sighted in properly.
Nice BoomStick!!
Sweet!!
Am terribly jealous....
And it is eveel black....
Just received 25 boxes of that very ammunition a couple of weeks ago. Can't wait to put a few through a hole once I get my scope zeroed.
Green with envy!
A 100 yd. zero? That set up should be good for a 250 or 300 yd. zero.
Looking forward to pics of that rifle in the rack of a deer as The Boy smiles at his first hunt.
Jay,
Glad to see you got one like you mentioned to me in your email awhile back when I asked for your .308 recommendations. I'm still looking for mine, but I hope I get one as nice as yours.
So how are Barska optics?
Very Nice!
I also have a Savage 10 in .308. I grabbed a Major John Plaster Ultimate Sniper Stock. It feels great, has a very strong aluminum block, and makes the rifle look 6x more badass.
My optic that I put on was a Barska SWAT 6-24x44. It has a clear picture with the 30mm tube, an illuminated reticle, and holds its zero perfectly.
I'd recommend handloads. I get sub-moa accuracy with 168gr A-Max bullets with a Winchester case and primer filled with 41.5 grains of IMR 4895.
Happy Shooting!
A rifle like that NEEDS good glass which is going to cost min $400. Don't go cheap on the glass.
Anon (and Stretch),
My gun club's rifle range only goes out to 160 yards (and 160 yards is the berm, no stands; 100 yards is the longest distance with holders).
Once I have the rifle set at 100 yards, I have several offers for 200 and 300 yard distances that I will definitely take advantage of. Once I get a feeling for how she shoots at 100 - 200 yards I'll see about putting better glass on her...
BTW, would it surprise anyone to know that she's already been transplanted into a Choate stock?
That is the exact stock I went with. I use the high cheek rest for use with the 44mm scope. I also went with the OD green (looks awesome) and filled the pistol grip with sand. It adds a pound or so, but it dampens recoil.
For the weird T-Rail they have in the front, if you want to attach your harris bipod so it doesn't wobble, I simply put two painted popsicle sticks on either side. If you want pictures I can send some!
what no H-S Precision stock?
seriously though, the Choates are nice
I have a model 10 with a McMillan, they are a great value and great shooters
