More Cool Plane Stuff...

...this time, it's much smaller, though...

That's really neat, but I can't imagine how much money it'd set you back if you missed by even a little on the landing...

That is all.

That's pretty awesome.

Of course, it also leads to a frightening idea - the thought of terrorists with a similar model, high explosives, a smart phone with GPS, and someone with the right electronics and programming skills. All of which are easy to find, and (except for the explosives) completely unrestricted in the US.

Yeah Jake, but you can do the same thing, and easier with a Cessna.

Well, using this model would be a bit over the top. Use a more normal sized model, though, and there's a much lower chance of getting it shot down than if you use a real plane. Do it with a dozen or more, and pick a crowded venue to target, and the results would be pretty ugly. Unlike a real plane, it would be extremely hard to track the origin point, so the bomber would probably survive to do it again, too.

Once the hardware and software for the plane/phone interface were designed, mass production would be almost trivial.

I read about a guy in British Columbia who built a balloon-launched, GPS-guided sailplane. It floats up to (I think) 50,000 feet, then the plane cuts away and can glide 50 miles or more. (It's even able to find thermals to extend its glide time.) The guy built it from off-the-shelf electronics and fiberglas.

It wouldn't take much to let the balloon drift and cut the plane loose when it comes within 20 miles of a designated target.

Proving once again that it doesn't matter what Hobby you're into there is always some asshat with an unlimited budget willing to go completely off the scale just so he can have the biggest best toy around.

The real thing is also flying again... Just finished the test flights and it will be back on the show circuit this year!

Someone built a RC B-52 with jet engines.

It crashed.
