Holder announces safety initiative after rise in officer deaths

Washington (CNN) -- Attorney General Eric Holder announced a Law Enforcement Safety Initiative Tuesday, calling the number of law enforcement officers killed in the United States so far this year "simply unacceptable."

Holder's comments came as he met with a group of police chiefs and the heads of several federal law enforcement agencies to talk about the problem. He said the initiative will involve all U.S. attorneys around the country meeting with their local police and others to discuss the issue and to try to find solutions.

Of the 49 officers killed so far this year, less than half were killed with a firearm. I'll go out on a limb and guess that of the 23 killings, exactly none were the result of a law-abiding gun owner. I'll go out on another limb and say that we're in for a rough time, given that:
When asked if the Obama administration would call for new legislation -- possibly including a ban on extended ammunition clips like those allegedly used by suspect Jared Loughner in the January shootings in Arizona that killed six people and wounded 13 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords -- Holder said nothing is "off the table," but he said he wants to look at how existing laws are carried out first.
"Nothing is off the table". Folks - and I mean all freedom-loving Americans here - if that doesn't make your blood run cold, then I don't want to know you. How many law enforcement officials were killed in the Tucson shooting? Oh, that's right, none - yet it's used as justification for looking at new laws - where nothing is off the table.

What's especially interesting is the list of attendees at the meeting:
New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier, Philadelphia Police Chief Charles Ramsey and Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee. Federal law enforcement leaders included FBI Director Robert Mueller, U.S. Marshals Service Director Stacia Hylton, Drug Enforcement Administration chief Michele Leonhart and acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Ken Melson.
Hmmm. What common bond do the city-level officials have? They're all in high-crime areas that for the most part go to extreme lengths to prevent the law-abiding from carrying arms. On the federal level, all but the US Marshals have seen events that erode the public's confidence in their ability to discern between actual criminals and easy convictions...

So excuse me if I don't buy the "oh, we're going to go after the career criminals rather than law-abiding gun owners." If they had any interest in putting away the career criminals, why haven't they do so up until now? We've had magazine bans, importation bans, bans based on cosmetic features, bans on guns that were too small, bans on guns that were too big, etc. - have any of these measures even noticeably reduced gun crime? All evidence points to no.

But let's do it again, only harder! That's the gun control way!

That is all.

Holder is a typical cleless member of the elite, still running on the old conventional wisdom. He doesn't know that all the credibility and legitimacy have drained out of the room.

Or if he does realize this, he doesn't know what to do about it.

Our job is to keep doing exactly what we're doing. As more and more states keep loosening restrictions - and as crime rates continue to fall - the elites keep looking clueless to the voters.

I hope and pray you're right, Borepatch.

"Never let a crisis go to waste" and "Nothing is off the table" are what we're getting from this administration.

They're going to get more and more desperate as 2012 looms and Teleprompter Jesus might not be annointed for a second term (dependent, of course, on which stooge the Stupids run...)

I'd love it if this were the dying gasps of the gun control movement; if they are grasping at the last straws of relevancy. It certainly seems as though they are, going back to the canard of "ZOMG OFFICER SAFETY" last used in the late 1980s/early 1990s (Lethal Weapon 3 anyone) with "cop killer" bullets.

What scares me is that they've been on the defensive too long.

With this group, expect them to go on the offensive.

How about letting our folks go out actually armed with something more than a beanbag thrower with 'permission' to actually defend themselves without the fear that the DOJ is going to come down on them if they do? I'm betting that untying the hands of our guys would go a long way towards keeping them safer.

You know, they should _absolutely_ push laws for more gun control. Hell, go all out for a full-on ban. No guns anywhere. Disarm the whole country.

Then watch the election returns turn what tiny shred of credibility their party still has left by 2012 into chum.

Guns are the new third rail. Everybody's talking about what we can change about Social Security...but touch the guns, and your political career is _over_.

It is difficult for me to imagine a circumstance that would make me happier.

From what I've seen about this trend is the following: It seems to occur to those LEO's attempting to do a Raid or serving a Warrant, and some sort of Swat Operation is in progress. So the local cop on patrol isn't being killed as he drives by the Bank. Also, there seems to be a lot of U.S. Marshall's being killed during these raids. Also, hearing that a lot of the LEO's are being shot in the Head or sideways through the shoulders into the Heart/Lungs, thus by- passing normal Body Armor. Also, a lot of these shooters are multiple offenders who have only been back in society a short time.

So, it's sounds like the word has been passed around the Prison Crowd on How to Defeat a Swat Raid. Also, somehow there is a disturbing mindset among them that one should go out in a Blaze of Glory, almost as if that being a Martyr is a Good Thing. Wonder where they learned that ?

The LEO's need to change their tactics (if you won't allow the Cops to throw Frags when you breach the door, let the Robot go first!) , and Holder needs to realize that just because a LEO is a Federale, that doesn't mean the Bad Guys will bend over. But he seems to have forgotten how his plans when down the tube when he sent in the ATF at Waco, under the orders of his Boss Janet Reno. Some people never learn.

But EVERYONE in Barry's Administration seems to have the Attitude that everyone who is NOT THEM needs to bend over, doesn't it? And of, course, since NONE of the murders was caused by law-abiding Gun Owners, we must distract the Masses and lay the Blame on the Tools, not the Criminal Element who THEY have helped to Nurture and Grow through their LIberal Crime Fighting Policies ("It's not their Fault that they________, it's Society's because we haven't spent enough time and money on________").

Jay, I've got a whole Kevin-esque rant written up, sans links, but Blogger won't accept it, as it's too long. With your permission, I'd like to post it as a three-part, or I'd be glad to email it to you first, if you wanted to look it over before I send it.

If you prefer the email, let me know, and I'll get with you in IRC for the email address.
