And the Winner is 22/45!
Yep, he opted for the Ruger 22/45. The local gun store was running a crazy sale: $270 for a brand new 22/45 with bull barrel, two magazines, box, lock, etc. At that price it was hard to pass up. Under $300 for a .22LR stand-in for a .45ACP? That's a no-brainer right there.

This is my Ruger. There are many like it but this one is MINE.There's nothing like your first firearm. Cherish it, Brad. Never sell her. My first firearm was also a Ruger, a Security Six .357 Magnum with 6" barrel, and I am reminded that I need to take her out to the range sometime soon. I'm figuring Brad will have many years of rimfire-shootin' fun with this new heater.

Great choice. If Brad decides he to get rid of that stupid mag safety I'll be happy to show him how. It's a cheap mod that makes the mags drop free nice and easy and eliminates some of most confusing steps to tearing it down.
Nice, now you can get him an "ultimate cliploader" (dumb name, great gadget) and a bulk pack of ammo for his birthday.
And I'll pile on on dumping the magazine interlock (it is _not_ a safety, safety devices don't _make_ you put a magazine in the weapon during cleaning) ... that pistol has the potential to grow with the shooter, drop-in parts can clean up the trigger once he finds himself limited by it, I don't think any but the world's top shooters could out-shoot the mechanical accuracy of a Ruger mk__ pistol.
Excellent choice! order eight more mags and a loader assist tool! Oh and a holster!

Thx for posting the pic. I expect many, many years of rimfire enjoyment from My Ruger.
@Mopar - removing the "lawyer" features at some point will probably happen, but out of the box I think I'll keep things original. Once I truly understand all the nuances of how the 22/45 operates, then and only then will I start thinking about mods.
@d - Rest assured, I'm soon to be picking up a box of Federal copper plated bulk ammo at the local Wally World just across the border in Free America. One of the local sportsmen's clubs has an indoor rimfire pistol league . . . I figure that with good ammo the bull barrel of My Ruger should get the job done just fine.

For those interested . . . some future purchases I've been considering once funding permits. In no particular order:
1) 10/22 rifle
2) M1 garand from the cmp
3) 1911 pattern pistol in .45acp
4) .357 revolver, maybe smith 686
5) 12ga pumper of some sort
6) Beretta 92 or similar
7) .22 bolt rifle - savage maybe

Brad, re future purchases: Get the 10/22 next, it will help with your Basic Rifle Skills. Plus, you can use it for the .22LR Appleseed Shoots, which even Mass. allows, and is a great way to build up "Rifleman" skills, and most Indoor Ranges have no problem with you shooting it, unlike some which have "No Full Power Rifle".
Save the Garand for last. Great Rifle, but the days of Cheap Milsurp Ammo are disappearing, and Commercial 30-06 is running almost a Buck a round.
But have fun, and remember, Focus on the Front Sight!
I'd like to get rid of the mag safety, not sure how easy it would be. I highly recommend getting one of those quick loaders, mine has saved my thumbs enormous amounts of damage.
And get on Midway's mailing list. It's crack for gunnies. Every few months they have a sale on Ruger mags. And they ship ammo to ... oh, never mind. Maybe when you move to America.
May I jump in here, folks? I made my first purchase on Tuesday, from the kindly folks at Four Seasons in Woburn. It was a Beretta 92FS, with one 10-round mag and two 15-rounders. Everyone should have at least one high-capacity firearm, methinks.
(My first purchase, but not my first gun. I'd previously received a .45 Sig P220 as a gift. I promptly bought a .22 conversion kit for it, in large part because of Our Host's recommendation, and I've been happily shooting both calibers at BGRA whenever I get the chance.)
I was also delighted to find out that Dragon Leatherworks can accommodate me for both pieces. I'll be placing an order or two soon.
Now, a S&W .357 revolver would be nice to add to the collection...
