Random Gunnie Facts About Me...

Had this post bouncing around for a couple of days now. Here's a handful of interesting gun facts about your humble host:

  • I do not own a single Evil Black Rifle. In fact, the only black-furnitured longarms I possess are shotguns. I do not own an AR-15, FN/FAL, etc.
  • I do not own a Ruger 10/22. I almost bought one for this year's Buy A Gun Day, but the nail on the side of the road had other plans...
  • I do not like Glocks. It's not a bias against polymer-framed/striker-fired guns, as I really like my Kel-Tec and my S&W SW99s; I just don't like the way the Glock fits in my hand. I also don't like that trigger-safety deal, and the "press the trigger to disassemble" nonsense.
  • I don't get to shoot as often as I would like (okay, that's not a big revelation) - recently I've only been getting to the range once every other month (!!!).
  • I finally joined a gun club after going to a public range for years (and mooching off friends who were members at other clubs...)
  • I have an apparent knack for shooting trap - the last time I tried, which was only the second time I'd ever shot trap, I hit 14 out of 15 birds.
  • In fact, reverting to random fact #1, I only have a small handful of semi-automatic centerfire rifles, and all but one of them are broken in some way. The one that works fine is my Russian VEPR in .308, which has magazines that are apparently made out of unicorn horn, as I have been unable to find a replacement after searching for over a year.
  • I used to prefer revolvers to semi-autos for handguns, as revolvers were easier to clean. I have since discovered the unique joy of the polymer-framed pistol and how disgustingly easy to clean they are...
  • Along those lines, I really hate cleaning guns, but I am absolutely fanatical about cleaning them right after shooting and getting them as clean as possible. I clean all of my .22s after every range trip, even though the manufacturer's recommendations don't support it.

I think that's enough weird gunnie info about me for now...

That is all.

I have a feeling I'm going to get a Ruger 10/22. I thought I'd prefer a bolt action, but I'm being won over by the idea of high capacity mags.

I'm with you on the plastic pistol thing. I can have the Kahr apart, cleaned, and reassembled in less than five minutes. Good as new.

Browning Buckmark .22 however ... I *hate* cleaning that gun. It has it's own wrench and all the parts are ... small! Feh.

Breda,

One of the big reasons I don't yet have a 10/22 is that I already own like seven .22LR rifles. I've got three semi-autos, two tube-fed and one mag fed, already, so getting *another* semi-auto .22 rifle just seemed like overkill...

The CZ-452 is a sweeeeet bolt-action .22 if you change your mind...

Liberty,

I cut my teeth cleaning semi-auto pistols on the WWI military issue Colt 1911. A 1911 handgun that was built in 1917, and has all original parts. So not only is it somewhat complicated to take apart (for a novice gunnie), it's also rather valuable...

Next semi was a Makarov, which was easier to strip but still a pain in the ass {pull down trigger guard, push slide forward, then back, etc...}

It wasn't until the SW99 that I really started coming around to self-loading pistols...

The real advantage of a 10/22 (or other semiauto) over a bolt is that you don't have to reacquire NPOA after each shot. Here in the PRM, we can't buy new hi-caps, but I don't really care for the 10/22. The Ruger 10 round rotary mags are 100% reliable, which is more than I can say for the hi-caps I've seen.

I'd put my Browning Hi-Power up against any plastic pistol in the ease of cleaning department. Lock the slide back, push the slide stop out, take the tension off the slide by holding it back and take the slide stop the rest of the way out. Then the slide slides off the front, pop the guide rod off the barrel, and lift the barrel out.

My 10/22 is the only auto-loading rifle I own; all my others are bolt action.
I have more revolvers than autos; my only autos are a 1911 Springfield, and a couple of Ruger Mark I's.

i don't own any center fire rifles yet... but i do have 2 .22s... a 10/22 i picked up 2 months back... and my trusty 50+ year old JC Higgins model 31 (sears catalog,1950's)... i just set up a deal for another JC Higgins semi auto so i guess I'm becoming a collector...

now my next project is building my first AR, hopefully that will start by the end of the month.

"I do not own a single Evil Black Rifle."

Wouldn't that VEPR qualify? From the Friday gun porn pic is looks like it has black plastic furniture. And being from the AK family is definitely evil.

arthur,

The VEPR's actually wood-stocked (dark pic; it looked much lighter/true-to-life on my PC at home).
