Paging All Paramedics, EMTs, and Other Emergency Care Workers

Ambulance Driver has a favor to ask of you.
If you have a story you’d like to share, send it to me. I want personal stories, patient care stories, stories of despair and frustration, stories of fatigue and exhaustion, stories of hope and wonderment. If you’re an EMT who worked in any phase of the hurricane response, or a Louisiana EMT who was rescuing victims for days on end while wondering if he even still had a home, I want to hear it.
There's a lot of stories out floating around with regard to Katrina and the aftermath. As we all know, the media got a huge amount of it wrong, but there was also a lot that wasn't widely reported on that should have been. From police officers openly looting in WalMart to police opening fire on unarmed people, we heard a lot about the bad things that happened.

This sounds like a chance to talk about the good things...

That is all.

The Gaffe That Keeps On Giving...

Biden congratulates wrong guy in Boston mayor race
BOSTON (AP) — When Marty Walsh won the Boston mayor’s race, Vice President Joe Biden was quick to pick up the phone to congratulate him.

But, there was a problem. The Marty Walsh who Biden had on the other end of the phone wasn’t the Marty Walsh who had been elected to succeed longtime Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.
Ah, Plugs, you silly scamp. It's too bad you don't have, oh, the most powerful search team on the planet working for you, right? You know, so you could get the right Marty Walsh in Boston. I mean, that's not asking too much, is it? You know, to get the right guy on the phone? I doubt Biden actually picked up the phone and called; I'm sure this was pre-arranged.

Would have been nice if they'd gotten it right, mind you...

And again, I feel compelled to point out the dichotomy in treatment from the media. Dan Quayle reads off the cue card - which was wrong - and he is forever saddled with "potatoe", yet Biden comes out with a new screw-up pretty much on a regular basis and it's all "oh, leave poor Joe alone, you know the syphilis has rotted his brain"...

I will admit that picking Biden as VP is one of the smarter things Obama has done. There is practically no chance on this planet that anyone would want any harm to come to the President, as the risk of hearing the amazingly frightening phrase "President Biden" is far too great.  Then again, if Biden got out of hand we could always throw something shiny off in the tall grass...

Joe Biden truly is the comedic gift that keeps on giving...

That is all.

Carryin' 9 To 5

Kevin (I know that dude!) has a great article over at Shooting Illustrated.

Carrying in the office is something I've never considered, living and working in MA. There's nothing specifically prohibiting it in my office, other than the fact that an inadvertant exposure would most likely get me fired and also blacklisted from working in MA ever again. ("Why did you leave your last job?" "Oh, I got fired for carrying a gun. SECURITY!!!") Kevin's a practical guy, so he rated several different carry methods with regard to how they work with business casual.

It's a good read, go take a look!

34 Years Ago Today...

Marion Mitchell Morrison passed away at the age of 72. I mention this because he is responsible for one of my all-time favorite quotes, ever; even more favored than Franklin's quote about liberty and safety:
Life is hard. It's harder if you're stupid.
What's your favorite John Wayne quote?

DEFINITELY Mightier Than Some Silly Ol' Sword...

Robb reviews the Tuff-Writer Tactical pen.

Robb got a chance to take the Tuff-Writer tactical pen out for a spin and put it through it's paces. Say what you want about the man with no pants, he writes one excellent review. Just factual enough to count as a review, humorous enough that you don't want to claw your eyeballs out over "My G-D HE'S TALKING ABOUT A WRITING IMPLEMENT". Seriously, go and take a read. Robb is one of those people that is just disgustingly talented - programming, graphic design, guitar playing... If he wasn't a Marine armed with a tactical pen you'd want to pinch him for taking up so much damn talent...

And, should the folks at Tuff-Writer decide they want a second opinion, well... AHEM...

That is all.

And I'm MEETING This Dude Next Week!

Kevin has an uber-post up. You owe it to yourself to read this.

Kevin shines the light of truth on the tenets of the gun control movement. Naturally, they're scurrying like roaches when the kitchen light is turned on, but it's a great post just chock full of silly facts that the gun haters will ignore. It's a great reference to toss in when in a debate with one of the gun control True Believers - if for nothing else as a literary Rorschach test to see what they view in the post. Some will ignore it outright; some, like the targeted Markadelphia, will point to its length as some sort of detriment, as though all the hard work that Kevin put into the post was just to prove an erroneous position.

I know, I know, he should have just run a Google search and called it a day...

We don't argue to convince people that already believe in gun control. If they were capable of critical thought, they'd have abandoned gun control as the sham that it is long ago. Believing that more laws are the answer to criminals breaking laws you passed to stop criminals from breaking laws is the textbook definition of insanity, and intellectually honest folks can recognize the problem immediately. The people we're arguing to convince are the fence-sitters, the dabblers, the folks that haven't really thought much about it either way. The gun control people have raw emotion on their side - honestly, 20 dead first graders is a damn powerful argument, let's not kid ourselves. They are utterly shameless about standing in the blood of the innocent to get what they want - even when they themselves admit that it wouldn't have stopped the shooting in the first place.

I mean, honestly. They proposed "universal background checks" as the solution to a shooting where someone murdered someone for their legally-acquired and legally-owned firearms for which background checks were performed. On what planet does this make any sense? We need to pass a law requiring comprehensive background checks for every transfer (even temporary ones like loaning a gun to a friend to go hunting or letting someone try your new Blastomatic out at the range) so that in the future, deranged psychopaths won't shoot their mothers in the face and steal their guns? To quote the kids, LOLWUT?

Quite frankly, raw emotion is all the gun control movement has. They can't - won't - use the racism card, as gun control has its roots firmly planted in the Jim Crow laws of post Civil War America. They can't - won't - use the sexism card, as quite frankly it's hard to argue that a firearm isn't the most effective way for a 100 pound woman to fend off an attack from a 225 pound man. Every single thing they have predicted with regards to gun control has been wrong: No blood in the streets with liberalized conceal carry; no one has been killed in drive-by bayonettings since the expiration of the Assault Weapons ban; they have been proven wrong repeatedly over the past 20 years all they can do now is wait for the next tragedy.

I'd have a lot more respect for the movement if more of them would admit to what they truly want, as Senator Feinstein has: Mr. and Mrs. America, turn 'em all in.

That is all.

Go. Read. NOW.

Erin hits it out of the park. OUT. OF. THE. PARK.

It's a direct slap-in-the-face to the whole "guns are dangerous" crowd, the ones who so smugly emoted "you love your guns more than children" in the wake of the Sandy Hook shootings. A straightforward hit amidships for those who think that if we snapped our fingers and magically made all guns disappear forever the world would instantly become "safe" from all violence. Of course, the events in Boston this week show otherwise, but as we've seen time and time again, facts are meaningless to those who oppose freedom.

Look, freedom is messy. It's scary, and dangerous, and unpredictable. Living in a free society means, yes, it is possible that the wrong people might do something that winds up in innocent people getting hurt. But they can and do hurt innocents with cars, knives, bombs, fists, and sticks - only when it comes to firearms do we start blaming the tool rather than the person using the tool. Plenty of folks noted that when the bomb went off at the marathon, no one blamed pressure cookers or ball bearings - they blamed the terrorists who planted the bombs. After Sandy Hook, though, all we heard was how "assault weapons" and "high capacity magazines" were to blame rather than the disturbed young man pulling the trigger.

Our rights - all of them, not just the ones we happen to enjoy - are non-negotiable. Not the freedom of speech, under fire from both the right (ban books!) and the left (political correctness); not the freedom to be free of unreasonable search and seizure; nothing. It is not a buffet from which we can pick and choose those rights we wish to defend - we defend the entire bill, or those who wish to rein in our freedoms will divide and conquer.

Thank you, Erin, for such a great post.

That is all.

Pistol/Carbine Combos...

Ooh, here's an interesting one. Brad_in_MA writes in with a tough question:
In light of all the AR pattern rifles having been scooped up, I got to thinking . . . . what kind of "pistol" and carbine combo could be had which is also MA compliant?  I put pistol in quotes because something like a Smith & Wesson 686 with a .357-chambered lever action rifle would be a potent combo as well.  If we're talking semi-auto pistol, the idea would be to have one set of magazines shared between the carbine & the pistol, such as a Kel-tec Sub2000 that would accept Beretta 92 mags.

This hits on a double whammy - the MA "Assault Weapon" ban as well as the Approved Firearms Roster {spit}. I'll answer Brad's question, then open it up to a more general one.

For MA-specific combos, especially the shared magazine one, there are very few available. The pistol has to be MA-approved; the carbine has to be AWB-compliant, and neither can take new standard capacity magazines. They either have to eat from 10 round magazines or have pre-ban available.

First up, I'll offer the Kel-Tec SUB2000 carbine. It's completely AWB compliant, and comes configured to take Glock 17 or 19, SIG SAUER P226, Beretta 92, or S&W model 59 magazines, all of which are pre-ban. The P226 and 92FS are MA-compliant; the Glock and S&W are old enough to have versions available. I'm finishing up a review of the SUB2000 right now, and so far it has performed very well.

The KRISS Vector has an AWB-compliant version, and the Glock 21 is possible to find in MA although not on the roster. This has the advantage of being in .45 ACP, which is G-d's Own Pistol caliber, but it's also more expensive. For those with the time to search, a Marlin Camp Carbine in .45 ACP is certainly AWB compliant and there are a number of 1911s. There are exotic options like the Mech-Tech conversion kit that allows you to turn a 1911 or Glock into a carbine, but that's getting a little outside the scope of this exercise.

Beyond that, it really gets more difficult. There's the Beretta CX4 Storm, which is AWB-compliant; however the matching pistol version, the PX4, is not on the Roster. Hi-Point makes a pretty inexpensive carbine, but their pistols are not MA compliant. HK's semi-automatic USC .45 ACP carbine is compliant, but uses a magazine different from their pistol line.

Alternately, there's going old-school - a lever- or pump- action .357 Magnum or .44 Magnum rifle and a revolver. Most if not all of the revolvers available from Smith & Wesson and Ruger are available in MA, and the rifles are 100% AWB compliant - even the 15 round .38 Special versions (because it's a fixed magazine). One of the advantages to this set-up in my opinion is that you can have a CCW piece (J-frame), a larger (K- or N-frame) for belt carry, and a lever action rifle for hunting out to 100 yards.

So, what other combinations are there for a pistol caliber carbine and a pistol?

That is all.

Go. Read. NOW.

Kathy's got some great tips on staying alert even when you can't.

Sure, we'd all like to think that we're all awareness ninjas, in Condition Orange at all times, ready to spring into action. Truth is, if you really were in condition Orange all the time, they'd be squirting Thorazine down your throat with a turkey baster in under a month. Sooner if you have kids. I try to stay alert and aware of my surroundings, and I usually am "that guy", the one that insists on sitting with his back to the wall and scans any room he's in repeatedly.

But even I know that I'm not always at full alertness. Whether it's because I'm trying to keep the kids from fighting at the grocery store or responding to a text while waiting in line, I know that there are times when my attention is not fully on my surroundings. Kathy's excellent post reminds us that even when we can't pay full attention, there are steps we can take to minimize our time in Condition White.

Go, read, save for later and read again, it's just that good.

That is all.

If He Only Blogged...

I just to share this from my good buddy Bruce's Facebook:
If you ban abortions, law-abiding women will be turned into criminals as they turn to the black market for illegal abortions.

If you ban guns, criminals will turn into law-abiding citizens and stop carrying and using guns illegally.

And two plus two equals penguin.

I commented that this was similar to the twin assertions that the cigarette manufacturers using an animated camel as a mascot was a thinly-veiled attempt to get children smoking, but that there was no way that violent video games aggressively marketed to teenagers have any effect whatsoever on elevated aggression levels... Or that smoking in movies was ZOMG HOOKED TEH CHILLENS, whereas seeing 195,000 McDonald's commercials had no link to childhood obesity.

Mmm. Sacred cow burgers are the tastiest!

That is all.

Good Stuff Around the 'Net

Folks, there's a lot of good stuff out there. Here's some excellent reading material I've found related to the Newtown, CT murders and subsequent fallout.
Larry Correia has forgotten more about guns and gun laws that most people will ever learn. He has sold firearms, he has taught the UT concealed handgun permit class, this guy has done it all. He tackles gun control, some of the nuttier ideas floating around, and generally puts things in perspective. If you read nothing else on the purported gun control floating around, read this.

Will riffs on Joe Huffman's excellent article on how this should be the last stand for the gun control movement. Will's idea is that we should capitalize on the absurdity of "gun free zones" and run a series of commercial-length videos that detail the events from a witness's perspective. He suggests contrasting this with stories from legal defensive uses of firearms to show that for every horrible massacre like Newtown, there are thousands - or more - times where the presence of a firearm helped keep people safe. He's soliciting opinions and thoughts, and it's a great start of an idea.

He has opened up his post for folks that don't know a lot about guns and the current gun laws. He's encouraging them to post their suggestions, and then talking about them in a meaningful, constructive way. He's got a good list of ground rules - but basically, don't be a dick - and is encouraging both sides to engage in actual discussion. What a shock! This is a great idea; the one downside is that the folks that most desperately need to participate most likely won't...

He's got a great point. Now, I collect military surplus firearms, so I can't definitively say that none of my firearms have ever fired at a human being, but I can definitively state that I have never harmed another human being with any of my guns (with the possible exception of the Snubbie from Hell™).  Placing new laws on what I can or cannot own is not going to stop the next nutbag from causing death and destruction. Lunatics and criminals are not deterred by bans or gun free zones, and it's high time we stopped pretending they did anything except provide a false sense of security.

What's especially poignant is that by highlighting the PATRIOT Act, he hits the trifecta: It was widely and roundly decried by the left. yet they did nothing to repeal it once they held the reins of power; the right supported it wholeheartedly, then railed when the left came into power and [GASP] used those shiny tools against us; and it's a perfect example of bureaucratic inertia - laws in motion tend to stay in motion. Forever.

There's plenty more good stuff out there; these are some especially good reads - enjoy!

That is all.

Well Said. Go Read.

DaddyBear has his thoughts on the Aurora, CO mass shooting.

Other than comment at the speed with which Teleprompter Jesus interjected himself into this tragedy, I haven't said much about this shooting. There's still a lot of unknowns, and quite frankly, I doubt we'll ever know exactly how it went down. There are conspiracy theories about there being a second person involved; there are other, different conspiracy theories about this being planned to drum up support for the UN small arms treaty; and, naturally, the blood-dancing of the anti-gun folks.

What happened is horrific, there's no question. 12 dead. More than 50 wounded. Dozens of families whose lives are now forever altered by this event, all because they wanted to see a movie. This is something that happens in other countries, not here in the US, right? The media, naturally, is focusing on the weapons used - an AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle, a pump-action shotgun, and a handgun. All run-of-the-mill firearms - I've got a representation of each, as do I would imagine a large number of my readers.

There's been a lot made of the amount of ammunition the shooter ordered - ZOMG! 6,000 ROUNDS! - as well as a 100 round drum magazine (which, as it turns out, jammed partway through the attack). 6,000 rounds may sound like a lot to the media, but to someone like Caleb, that's a week's supply. I'd wager Tam went through close to that this past weekend at the Crimson Trace Three gun shoot. Hell, I'll probably be looking for about that much in advance of the Northeast Bloggershoot.

We may never know the reasons why the shooter chose this course of action. Maybe he was deranged. Maybe it was a pathological need for attention. Maybe he wanted to be famous. I don't know if we'll ever know for certain; although that won't stop the media from speculating. One thing is certain, though: it wasn't the guns, or the gear, or the ammunition. He could have wrought just as much death and destruction - if not more - with a gallon of gasoline and a Zippo lighter.

It's scary to think about that, though. It's frightening to think about how many ways one determined lunatic could kill a large group of people. Plow a car into a crowd. Douse a crowded nightclub with gas and light a match. Fire a rifle into a movie theater. The problem is that we've been sold a faulty bill of goods here. We've been told, with each atrocity, that we need to give up our essential freedoms in the name of safety. From the Assault Weapons Ban to the TSA, we're being asked to forgo the rights we are supposed to enjoy because a tiny subset of the population has exploited our freedoms against us.

There's a quote I used for a sig file many years ago: "There is no safety this side of the grave" - spoken by Jubal Harshaw in "Stranger in a Strange Land." The unsettling part of being a free people is that there may be some that misuse that freedom, often at the expense of others. We have Hobson's Choice: We either give up our freedoms - which is a tenuous gamble at best, as there are plenty of places much less free than the US that have mass killings - or we can accept that, once in a great while, something bad might happen because not all the bad people are in jail.

Some of us carry guns to guard against the second option.

Now, a lot has been made about the movie theater chain being of the persuasion that requires its patrons disarm before entering. I've seen calls for the theater to be liable for the damage caused because patrons weren't allowed to carry arms, and, quite frankly, that's hogwash - every one of those patrons had every right to refuse to patronize that theater or wait until the movie came out on video. While it's possible that a CCW holder or holders might have been able to return fire and either disable or at least distract the shooter, we'll never know - for every Jeanne Assam, there's a Mark Wilson.

We'd all like to think we'd have the courage of either Jeanne or Mark should we find ourselves in a similar situation. Fortunately, the vast majority of us won't be put to that test. It's natural, I think, in the wake of a horrific shooting like the one in Aurora, to think about one's reaction in that situation; we all go to the movies from time to time, and it's scary to think just how vulnerable we are in a dark, crowded movie theater. My Bodyguard 380 isn't going to be as effective as a rifle or a shotgun; it's even less effective if the theater chain has made me choose to leave it home.

One thing I'd really like to see, though, is for the media to stop deifying the shooter in these mass killings. In 24 hours, we now know more about the college background of the young man who shot up the movie theater than we do Barack Obama's tenure at Columbia. His face has been plastered all over the media, and his name is a household word. Why grant these monsters the very thing that they crave more than anything? Deny them the fame - and being infamous is just as effective as famous in today's overexposed world - and doom them to the same crushing anonymity they had before they ruined other people's lives.

There's a lot to be learned from this shooting - even if it's just how much we all have to learn about ourselves...

That is all.

Flattery Will Get You Everywhere...

DaddyBear took the news that a crustacean had been named after Bob Marley and ran with it.

He created a series of entries from some bloggers you might recognize, including your humble host:
■Crocuta Ragei – A strong animal which laughs a lot, but has a wicked temper if provoked.

Heh. I like it.

Anyhoo, I think creativity on such a grand scale should be shared and enjoyed. It's a fine bit of humor and insight, combined with just a bit of latin - you might just learn something. I learned that DaddyBear views me as a social carnivore. I can grok that.

Go, read, enjoy!

Random Bits & Bytes

Some random stuff out there, thought I'd provide some thinkin' fodder for the weekend...
I'll have my review of the KRISS up in the next week or so. It's a very nice firearm, it just didn't trip my trigger the same way it tripped Robb's. But I'll save that for the review...
Yep. The only reason that Congress is trying to make Holder pony up the documents pertaining to Fast & Furious is racism. And in Sharpton's world, Black Beauty was racist, too... Thanks to Stretch for the note.
From the BLNN, yes, the EPA is at it again. Would all those people out there blaming gas companies and their "high profits" for soaring prices at the pump please STFU now?
I've always used the metric that 5.56 can shoot either, .223 should stick to .223 specifically. Then again, I also really only get .223 Remington... Good information to have, especially for folks just getting into the ZOMG EVIL BLACK RIFLE game... And in other news, Luckygunner has a blog?
He's also got a decent rundown of the process involved in getting a suppressor and the time it takes. In addition to costing close to a thousand dollars (a quality suppressor runs anywhere from $500 to $700, plus the $200 stamp, plus shipping, etc.), it takes over half a year to come in. All for a piece of hardware that is mandatory on my car...
Go take a read - Our favorite author takes the Washington Post - specifically Dana Milbank - out behind the woodshed and gives them whatfor. He's also got a really good rundown of the Fast & Furious scandal, and the comments are chock-full of additional information such as Operation Wide Receiver, which is the Bush-era program Holder is trying to blame F&F on. There's a few little problems with this, such as the Bush program informed the Mexican government, only lost two firearms, and stopped the program when it was revealed to be flawed and basically useless...

Okay, that's about it for now - now go enjoy the weekend!

That is all.

Stupid People Doing Stupid Things...

Wow. A couple stories recently, both from the same general geographic area (that is NOT Massachusetts), that have me shaking my head.

Tam's got a (possibly apocryphal) story about an OC'r being "taught a lesson" by an imbecile.

Caveats out of the way first: Tam's story is related third-hand, and there are elements that are of the "convenient truth" variety. Could the story be true? Absolutely. Could it be embellished? Absolutely. The link goes to another thread, but the jist of the story is that Dude 1 is in a gun store, doing gun store things (if he's anything like me, he was trying to keep the contents of his wallet inside his wallet rather than handing over pictures of dead presidents to the nice gunstore people). He's also open carrying. Dude 2 sees him OC'ing, apparently decides to "teach him a lesson", and goes over, takes Dude 1's gun out of Dude 1's holster, clears it, and puts it down on the counter.

Again, caveats apply - we're assuming everything went down more or less as relayed here. Discussion on the event varies widely, with some pointing out the need for retention training, others focusing on the myriad ways this could have gone epically bad, and others still commenting on Dude 1's lack of awareness. Look, Dude 2 made a total dick move, end of list. If Dude 1 is anything like me, he's been to that gun store a few times. He knows the people there. He's allowed to relax his guard a little, because he's among folks he knows can back him up.

Dude 2 needs to keep his damn hands to himself before someone hurts him.

Mr. B had a run-in with one of Indiana's "finest" who had best edumacate himself about the law on OC in IN toot sweet.

About the only thing I can add to Mr. B's excellent AAR of the event is Bravo, sir. He handled the situation - and himself - perfectly given what happened. As for reporting the officer, my advice would be to call it in. His supervisor should have a talk with him about the legality of open carry, but more importantly about how to approach suspicious people - had Mr. B been a goblin, that'd be a dead cop right now. He obviously thought that his "Only One" status granted him superpowers - glad to see that Mr. B set him straight on that point...

Bottom line: Stay safe out there, folks - there's a lot of stupid floating around.

That is all.

Death of a 1911...

The_Jack had a KaBoom in his Kimber.

He's guessing it was either an excess of powder, or a bad case. He does an excellent job of walking through the potential causes for failure, re-tracing his steps leading up to the KaBoom, deconstructing what may have happened, and comes up with some very important lessons we'd all do well to heed. The damage to the gun was significant but not a complete loss, and fortunately The_Jack was only minimally injured (some light "stippling" he says).

Look on the bright side - if he'd been shooting a Glock, he'd still be looking for parts of his fingers...

That is all.

Today's Must-Read...

My fellow inmate MA resident Weerdbeard has an excellent read for the day:

Anti-Freedom, NOT Anti-Gun

He talks about the Zimmerman case and how the media has lost interest as more and more facts come to light that support Zimmerman's side of the events leading up to the shooting. He then proceeds to take the anti-gun side out to the woodshed for being, well, evil - they are actively working towards disarming all law-abiding people, yet actively support criminals. Then again, what would you expect from a group that laments a vicious criminal getting shot by his victim as a "gun death"?

Go take a read - Weerdbeard is onna those right smaht bahstids you hear so much aboot...

Continuing a Trend...

Linoge hits it out of the park with this post. I'll add mine with one of my favorites:

In keeping with the spirit of Linoge's post, I'll expand on my comments therein. I own an AK-47 pattern rifle and an AR-15 for precisely the spirit of his post. Back in the aughts, the BATFEIEIO decided that AK parts kits were far too dangerous to be imported, and ceased the importation thereof. A kit you could buy for ~ $100 containing a barrel, stock, etc. and only needed a new receiver to make whole was not allowed - so I had to have one.

The AR-15 was pretty much the same idea. Back in late 2008, when Barry O had won the presidency and it seemed like Chicago-style politics - and gun control - were going to be the norm, I figured it was better to get off my @$$ and get an AR to complement my AK just to be on the safe side. Now, after 3+ years of fiddling around with the Legos err, AR platform, I see how much fun they are and I've got another one in the works (and possibly a third on the horizon...).

It's a uniquely American outlook, I think - tell us we can't have something and we want it that much harder. Witness Prohibition - folks were willing to risk going blind over not being able to knock back an adult beverage. It starts out when we're kids - the easiest way to insure that your kids will find their way into the verboten cookie jar is to tell them that they absolutely cannot have one... Hence why it's so important to be open with your kids about guns rather than hide them away and pretending they don't exist, but I digress...

There's a time and place for "BECAUSE F**K YOU THAT'S WHY". There are folks that will not listen to any sort of reason whatsoever - the CSGV or Brady's come to mind - and this is the place for it. For someone honestly on the fence, show them a Robert Vogel video as to the insanity of making a 15 round magazine illegal - he can fire 10 rounds and load another magazine faster than most folks can empty a 20 rounder... Heck, for that matter, watch Jerry Miculek shoot a tuned S&W revolver. It is not the tool, and anyone with an even halfway open mind will be able to see that.

For those whose minds are slammed shut like a steel trap, "BECAUSE F**K YOU THAT'S WHY" works just fine...

That is all.

Jonathan Swift, Call Your Office

The folks over at Pro-Gun New Hampshire (live in NH? Join them now!) have picked up your torch and are running like hell with it...

“Turn Tail and Run” Law Proposed
Washington, D.C.   Senator Lousenburg (D. NJ) has filed the “Turn Tail and Run” (TTR) bill in the U.S. Senate which, if passed, would preempt ALL State “Stand Your Ground” (SYG) laws.  The new bill would impose a national duty to retreat at all times when one encounters a criminal threat or is about to become a victim of violent crime. New York City Mayor Bloomingidiot has made passage of the “TTR” a centerpiece of his national "Second Chance at Shoot First" campaign. The mayor heartily approved of TTR, especially since bodyguards of celebrities, VIP’s, and political figures were exempted.
You know what the sad part about this is, though? It's uncomfortably close to how a good portion of the legislature actually thinks. I'd wager that politicians like Bloomberg, Menino, Lautenberg, etc. probably think this is a fine idea - I mean, come on, it's not like criminals target the infirm or the weak, right? I mean, Hizzoner never has to worry about coming face to face with a mugger, so they must not really exist, right?

Anyway, bravo to the good folks at Pro-Gun NH for this biting bit of satire.

That is all.

Brought to my attention by Skidmark, who I think was also alarmed at how close to reality this really is...

Planet Check...

I had to stick my head out the window to see if the sky was still blue and that we were still on Planet Earth after reading this article...

New Fashion Wrinkle: Stylishly Hiding the Gun
Woolrich, a 182-year-old clothing company, describes its new chino pants as an elegant and sturdy fashion statement, with a clean profile and fabric that provides comfort and flexibility.

And they are great for hiding a handgun.

The company has added a second pocket behind the traditional front pocket for a weapon. Or, for those who prefer to pack their gun in a holster, it can be tucked inside the stretchable waistband. The back pockets are also designed to help hide accessories, like a knife and a flashlight.
The New York frikkin' Times just did a positive story on something having to do with concealed carry??? And got most of their fact correct (It's the NYT, I'm certain something there is wrong...). But don't worry! The comments are just chock full of that condescension, ad hominem attacks, and general smarmier-than-thou elitism we have come to expect from the NYT and her readers. Carry a gun for self-defense? You must be a paranoid racist who lives in perpetual fear.

The disconnect is palpable - in one comment, one of the ostriches states that we should take all guns out of the public domain - yet if one were to peruse the very paper they are commenting in, stories would abound of criminals carrying and using firearms - never mind other weapons - on a daily (hourly) basis. So who would be disarmed? The law-abiding. And yet they consider themselves to be the intellectual superiors.

It's a step in the right direction, that's for sure, but we've still got a long road ahead of us.

That is all.
