Death of a 1911...

The_Jack had a KaBoom in his Kimber.

He's guessing it was either an excess of powder, or a bad case. He does an excellent job of walking through the potential causes for failure, re-tracing his steps leading up to the KaBoom, deconstructing what may have happened, and comes up with some very important lessons we'd all do well to heed. The damage to the gun was significant but not a complete loss, and fortunately The_Jack was only minimally injured (some light "stippling" he says).

Look on the bright side - if he'd been shooting a Glock, he'd still be looking for parts of his fingers...

That is all.

Thanks JayG. I put up the report to help others.

There was also what looks like a FOD induced firing pin issue that was causing intermittent primer strikes out of battery.

So everyone reading the report don't just go "I only shoot reloads this can't happen to me."

At the very least wear your damn safety glasses.
