Checking Out...

My gun club is currently closed. At some point between Wednesday and Thursday, one of our members went into the pistol range, put his gun to his head, and took his own life. He was 38, same age as me. Club is currently closed; they're hoping to re-open soon, but obviously everyone is shocked.

We've been at loggerheads with the neighbors in the past - basically, some developer built a bunch of McMansions near the gun range, folks bought the McMansions and then were shocked to find the range. Certain busybodies didn't like the idea of those eeevil guns and tried, unsuccessfully, to get the club shut down; fortunately the county sheriff's office and the local PDs all shoot there, so no dice.

I only hope this man's last desperate act doesn't help the antis complete their goal...

That is all.

Wow, that's messed up. Its too bad nobody could get counseling or help to the guy in time to save his life.

Hopefully things get cleared up and go back to normal soon.

Oh dear. Poor bastard

I wonder why there? I guess there is some logic to it. He won't mess up his car or his house that way. And his family won't discover him. If he does it in the woods some unknown kid may find him and the gun. At the range there is less chance the bullet will cause any mischief after it does it's work on him, and the range folks are kinda strangers but ones that know how to handle a loose firearm (leave it alone mostly...)

But STILL. Dead Dude! Don't do that at the gun range. I'd rather no one did that sort of thing at all anywhere, but, sheesh. Don't do that at the range.

It wasn't a guy you knew, was it, Jay?

No, it wasn't anyone I knew, fortunately.

I've lost a couple friends to suicide, and known a couple more. Those left behind are hit the hardest.

The prevailing thought is that he chose the club because he knew he'd be found, and not by his family. The gun would be secure, in a secure location under lock and key, rather than if he just shot himself in his car in a parking lot somewhere.

He put some thought into it, that's for sure.

I only wish he'd chosen some other way; or at least some other place.

My sympathy to the family, and good luck with the range. They take there good sweet time doing anything to get a range re opened. Scituate is still closed over a year after someone supposedly hit a mcMansion with a stray shot. . . no proof it came from the range but it is still closed

WOW thats too bad... we've all had difficult times in our lives and the end result is usually they pass. Some just can't let go of the demons.

Too bad.

Sorry to hear that... It's never easy, and now just more fuel for the antis :-(

That just sucks all around. I don't understand the draw of suicide for some people. I hope I never do.

Jay, I'm so sorry to hear this. His poor family must be devastated.

Poor guy was just tired of his demons, I guess. A permanent solution to a temporary problem. It's always so sad for those left behind to try and deal with it. I still think about my friend Bill, who shot himself. You never really get over it.

Surprisingly, it's quite common at ranges. It's happened twice that I know of at one indoor range here in town. My CCW instructor, a gal, had to deal with both of them. She and her husband own the range. At least three others in Vegas that I'm aware of.

That's a shame, Jay. None of us really know what demons others are struggling with.

Been there bro, but with a close personal friend. It ain't pretty and it's certainly not easy.

Hope they don't do anything silly with your range.

Came this close once myself, after losing everything.
