Music to Make You Move

Lissa mentioned music she liked to work out to, and asked:
What songs get your heart kicking in the morning?
So, naturally, being one who recognizes blogfodder when he sees it, I had to expound... *g* I've been working out daily for over three years now, adding in a daily workout component to my fitness regimen after a year's worth of weight loss. I started out with an iPod shuffle, the little teeny tiny (I call it "inhalable" form) weighs-as-much-as-a-bandaid form of Apple crack; then moving up to my present Nano (which actually has less music on it, because I am a lazy-assed bastard). I can't get through my workout with the tunes pumpin'...

There's a definitive preference for hard rock/metal in my listening pleasure for several reasons, not the least of which being that it's just damn good for getting the blood pumping. I used to disappear into the library the week before a big test with my Walkman and a bunch of Metallica/Iron Maiden/Judas Priest tapes (yeah, I'm that old) and listen to 'em all back-to-back-to-back at a volume just shy of pain threshold...

As the expression goes, I told you all that so I could tell you this. Here are some of my very favorite songs to work out to:
  • Run to the Hills, Iron Maiden
  • Anti-Social, Anthrax
  • Unchained, Van Halen
  • (You've Got) Another Thing Coming, Judas Priest
  • My Town, Montgomery-Gentry
  • Living in America, James Brown
  • Thunderstruck, AC/DC
  • How Do You Like Me Now, Toby Keith
  • I Don't Wanna Grow Up, The Ramones
  • Hair of the Dog, Nazareth
  • Over the Eggshells, Mighty Might Bosstones
  • Photograph, Def Leppard
  • Magic Carpet Ride, Steppenwolf
  • Bulls on Parade, Rage Against the Machine
  • Stayin' Alive, The Bee Gees
(okay, I threw that one in to see if y'all were paying attention...)

So, what do you like to listen to when it's time to get the ol' ticker pumpin'?

That is all.

Jay,

Your "study" choices seem eerily similar to your TEOTWAWKI choices.

Is there something you are not telling us about your study sessions?

alan,

You've probably done your share of workouts, what with the USMC and all. You're excused...

PISSED,

Good list, and excellent call on Triumph! Gotta rip that album...

Reputo,

You think there might be a reason for that? ;)

Bram,

Another good list!

TheAxe,

Always been partial to Black Dog when it comes to Zeppelin and music to get you movin'. What can I say, I'm a sucker for the classics... ;)

Gratuitous remarks about the BeeGees will not be tolerated.

Besides, I have never heard of half the songs you mention.

It's tough to get old.

I prefer Classic Rock. Nothing written in the last thirty years can compete with Chuck Berry.

Unless maybe it's some of Gaelic Storm's re-imagined Irish stuff.

Enter Sandman-Metallica

Hands-down, the best kick-you-in-the-butt song when working out.

AC/DC works pretty well too.

Oddly, 80's hair band stuff (not the power ballads) can get me moving as well.

Heavy Metal is good, Iron Maiden especially, since their songs are often super long; they make the cardio time go by faster!

Lately I've been listening to "I Gotta Feeling" by the Black-eyed Peas on continuous loop for the last ten minutes or so of my workout, it's a catchy, bouncy tune and makes me work harder, with a smile on my face.

Judas Priest and Linkin Park are good, but so is Motown music!

AC/DC, "Hells Bells"

My stuff is all over the map...and its not workout tunes, its motorcycle tunes.

I have not time to workout (I dive 82 miles each way to/from work) and I do a 9 - 10 hour day at work...if I had ime to workout, I would be catching up on sleep instead.

But I digress...

There's nothing better than tunes to get you into the zone for an 80+ mile trek to work, fighting traffic that is trying to get into Manhattan.

So, the 15 tunes that pump at insane volumes in my helmet speakers which I set on shuffle are...

1) Surfing with the Alien - Joe Satriani
2) If the House is Rockin' - Brian Setzer Orchestra
3) Smokin' in the Boys Room - Motley Crue
4) White Cliffs of Dover - Eric Johnson
5) YYZ - Rush
6) La Villa Strangiato - Rush
7) I Can't Drive 55 - Sammy Hagar
8) Cat Scratch Fever - THE NUGE!!!!
9) Gates of Delierium - Yes
10) Low Rider - Gary Hoey
11) Hocus Pocus - Gary Hoey
12) Frankenstien - Edgar Winter
13) Broken Hearts are for Assholes - Zappa
14) Dancin Fool - Zappa
15) Sit on my Face - Monty Python
