Getting Closer to KoolAid...

Richard reviews the Smith & Wesson M&P 9 at Guns, Holsters, and Gear.

I've been lukewarm on the M&P series since their introduction in 2005. I had the opportunity to shoot a few M&Ps when I toured the S&W factory and range back in 2007 (was it that long ago?), and had issues with my grip activating the magazine release. This was enough of an issue for folks that S&W revamped the magazine release and resolved the problem, but I haven't looked at the M&P since. There's another issue that's unique to me and my anti-gun socialist hellhole state. I refuse to buy a 17-round gun when I can only use 10 round magazines. It's kind of a philosophical thing for me. It's like buying a Corvette but only being able to run it on 5 cylinders.

However, there is an option available. The Smith & Wesson M&P 45 comes from the factory with a 10 round capacity, meaning that magazine restrictions do not apply. It also happens to be in G-d's own pistol caliber (.45 ACP) joining my brace of 1911s and my G30 for .45 ACP chambered goodness - it would be nice to have a full size polymer gun in the mix. I'm interested to see how the M&P compares with the Glock G30 for shootability - I know it's not going to shoot anything like a 1911, being a completely different platform. The MA trigger will be problematic, but there are many options available to fix that.

Wonder if anyone from Smith & Wesson peruses MArooned - if so, I'd like to chat about a T&E sample... *g*

That is all.

If I ever ever ever finish this damn barn and get to the range, I'll be sure to review mine. Along with the Laserlyte RSL that I'm thus far unimpressed with.

What are your thoughts on the thumb safety on the M&P45?
If you think of it as a 1911 polymer upgrade, it kind of makes sense. On the other hand, you have a G30, so you are not stranger to guns with only "internal safeties".
If you had your druthers, what would it be?

Saw that, Z. At least there's iron sights too, right?

Old Windways,

I'm also a revolver guy, and except for Ambulance Driver's weirdo .22, *very* few come with any kind of safety.

IMHO, there's only one safety that matters - the grey matter betwixt one's ears.

Mechanical devices fail. Proper training and good habits don't.

The only thing the thumb safty does for me is make it okay to sell in MA...

Jay, there are iron sights as well - the outlined notch on the RSL and a front dot. I expect I'll be swapping the whole mess out for tritiums at some point. For the time being I'm talking to LaserLyte about RMAing the sight.

OW - another vote for "the only safety that matters is between your ears". I've carried 1911s, a Bersa Thunder, a S&W 642, and lately a Kahr PM9. The 1911 was carried with the safety on. The Bersa was carried hammer-down, safety off. The S&W and Kahr have no manual safety. Same for the M&P9 I just got.

I bought an M&P9 a week ago. If it weren't for the Mass "safety" features, it'd be an awesome gun. Currently, the followers prevent 10+1 from being loaded properly. If you can actually shove 10 rounds in one (hard), you have to slam the mag in much harder than you should have to, and with 10+1 in the slide won't go back into battery without excessive force to the back of the slide.

The other issue is the trigger is horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible. I bought an APEX kit last night, $75 with C&R Discount from Brownells. That'll give it a great trigger.

Once I fix the followers (take a file to the bottom of the follower to shorten in) and install the APEX, I suspect this will be a really great gun, and it'll certainly do everything I bought the gun for. I knew this going in, so I'm cool with it.

Isn't more like buying a Corvette and only being able to drive 55?

Buy the Corvette. Because one day, when the zombies come, you will need a speedy get away...

FYI Jay, the Mass M&Ps come with a 10lb trigger, so the mag disconnect and thumb safety are strictly factory options here.

I've shot a bunch of M&Ps at the club and all of them have been sans thumb or mag safety, and had not been modified in any way.

Also was peeking at an M&P45 and an M&P9c in the new racks at Coin Collectors last night. No stupid safeties on those either.

FYI the M&P45 is closer in size to the G21 with a smaller grip (and magazine), the M&P45c is probably closer to your G30.

All I gotta say is "Project Bear Gun"!

Got to finger-fiddle a cop's M&P at the last county GOP meeting. Do not want -- slap the mag in and the gun goes back into battery, WITHOUT having to touch the slide or slide release.

According to him, ALL of his department's M&Ps have been doing that right from the box, since they switched over a year or so ago.
