Another Gunnie Bleg...

If you were going to put night sights on a defensive handgun, which ones would you choose? Straight white night sights? Green? Orange? Green front, orange rear? Trijicons? TRUGLO? Meprolight?

Installation should be pretty straightforward, and I may just call upon the resident guru (Wally) to help with the installation (read: "Wally! HELP!"). I know from having the LaserLytes installed on the Sig P226 and the Glock 30 that it only takes about a half-hour to swap sights. Both the Glock and the Sig had/have night sights (rears are now LaserLyte; fronts are still night sights) but in both cases they're pretty old and could be replaced anyways.

Any thoughts/suggestions/recommendations?

That is all.

PS: If any of the above companies happened to want impartial reviews done, I might know someone who could oblige... Just sayin'...

I think it depends on the gun. I've got TFO sights on my 3" XD, and while I think they would be great on a longer gun, the sights are rather long. That reduces the effective sight radius. Doing it again, I'd also get a different color for the rear--in the dark with both eyes open you can see 4 evenly spaced green dots.

If TruGlo has TFO sights for the gun, I'd get those. Since they don't make TruGlo's for my Walther, I went with Trijicon and have been very pleased.

For color, green in front, yellow in the rear (yellow is dimmer than green, so it helps draw the eye to the front sight). I would not do orange; fainter yet than yellow, and a shorter guarantee.

We had a discussion about night sights on Glocks on my local gun forum. One guy said the 3 dot scheme with yellow in front and green in back didn't work for him - the green was too dim and it distracted him to look for it. Another poster said the same thing, but yellow and white worked for him because the brightness was more even.

I have a set of Warren Tactical's dot-over-dot style on my full sized M&P. I plan to pick up another for the 9c I just brought home.

You know, this is where you literally have to test drive some to see what fits your eyes. You need to see what works for YOUR eyes in Daylight, Dusk and Dark. Will you be using a Flashlight? How about a Laser? Red Dot Front Sight, Red Dot Laser, in the heat of Battle, where do they converge or do you know what the Offset is? Do you Mix and Match Green and Red, and which one?

However, before you start on your Quest, I'd take the time and money and get an Eye Exam. If you've "Mellowed like a Fine Wine" to the point you need Spectacles, then you have to factor what your Sight looks like to you with and without Glasses.

You know, this could be Fun, and generate some Nice Blogfodder also. So Good Luck, and Good Hunting!

Trijicon...

Trijicon HDs with the orange ring.

Have seen enough issues with fiber optics on pistols to prefer to avoid that feature on social gun.

I have a three dot Trijicon on the 1911 Commander carry gun.

Come replacement time, it's going to just be a Trijicon front, matched to a Heinie Slant-Pro rear, sans dots.

Daytime, I'll have a nice, basic black sight picture.

Come social pleasantries in near darkness, all I'll want is the basic physical muscle memory of grip and relative gun position, and "front sight, press".

Anything more is overthinking it, in my opinion.

Jay, try a rig set up this way, and I do think you'll like it.

I've long preferred Meprolight over Trijicon because the dots on the Mepros are larger. But recently I installed a set of Trijis on my Kahr and I am well-pleased by them too.

I have a fiber-optic on the Mossberg and my S&W revolver, but for "serious social" guns I want something that glows in the dark.

I am head-over-heels for the Ameriglow Hackathorn (made by Trijicon) set on my G23 and they make one to fit the G30.

http://www.ameriglo.net/catalog/sights/pistol-sights/glock/special-combinations

Part # GL-434 for the G30.

A plain serrated black rear with an orange globe up front and a tritium vial in the middle of the globe. Some don't like orange and prefer white, and the Warren Tactical set is just as good, even if I don't care for the tritium in the rear.

One note: They are not target sights. But they can hit well once you get used to driving the dot. They place rounds to the center vial rather than the top of the front sight.
