RIP, Officer Gannon...

'M*A*S*H' star Harry Morgan dies at 96
"M*A*S*H" star Harry Morgan died at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday morning. The character actor was 96.

He was best known for playing Col. Sherman T. Potter on the long-running Army comedy.
Morgan may have seen his highest profile with M*A*S*H, but it was as Joe Friday's sidekick, err, partner Bill Gannon that his television persona was cemented. Even before that, Morgan was a bonafide Hollywood start, appearing in such hits as "Inherit the Wind" and "High Noon" and the all-star "How The West Was Won". He would also make appearances in oddball films like "Frankie and Johnny" and "The Apple Dumpling Gang". It's hard to imagine a more diverse film career than that enjoyed by Harry Bratsberg...

Rest in Peace, Colonel Sherman T. Potter...

That is all.

He also had a great appearance in the Duke's last film "The Shootist" which was a veritable who's who of Hollywood.

Look at that cast! one of the best Westerns ever made!

I liked his first appearance on M*A*S*H* as an Army general gone Section 8. Harry could play the most convincing nutjob and still seem like the guy you wanted to be your favorite uncle.

He had a long career, starting in the 1940s. Played a bad guy in a lot of westerns, including "The Far Country" and "Bend of the River" starring Jimmy Stewart and "The Oxbow Incident" starring Henry Fonda.

In the early 50s, before Dragnet and when Alan Alda was just a kid, he started in "December Bride" and it's spin off "Pete and Gladys".

He was sarcastically comical in "The Shootist" and added a fair bit to that movie.

Always liked that guy for some reason.
Very likable character.

Dave H hit on one of my favorites: General Steele - "that's with 2 e's, not all in a row", the episode being something like 'The General Cracked at Dawn'. Mr. Morgan was a riot!

Course, being old school in some bad ways, he got busted for beating his second wife - when he was in his 80s.

Not too many bad marks against him otherwise. Also being old school, that was a photo of his real (then) wife on his character's desk all through M*A*S*H.

We should all be lucky to do half as well.

RIP Sherman T.

I liked him in "Support your local Gunfighter" with James Garner.
