Police: Homeowner shoots, kills intruder in apparent home invasion
A person was fatally shot by a homeowner during an alleged home invasion this morning in rural LaSalle County, police said.

According to a press release from the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office, the police were notified about 3 a.m. of an alleged home invasion on County Highway One south of Earlville.
As are most of the DGC stories in the media, information is less-than-forthcoming; however it's generally accepted that someone in your house at 3AM that doesn't belong there isn't up to any good. Given that we have a second party taking off for parts unknown at a high rate of speed after the shooting (no honor among thieves, apparently) and the police don't seem too intent on charging the homeowner, I'd say we can add this to the count.

And as a note to the goblins out there: find a new line of work...

Dead Goblin Count: 257

That is all.

This happened about 20 miles from me. I was gonna send this one to you, but I held off because it doesn't pass the smell test. Earlville is a very small farm town (pop. <1900). Plus, this happened in the rural area surrounding. So, it seems odd to me that a couple goblins would just arbitrarily pick a random farmhouse to invade. Now, just because I'm a drug dealer doesn't give you the right to invade my house, BUT, if I lay down with dogs.......

LaSalle County, Ill. —

LaSalle County Sheriff’s Police are investigating a home invasion where the homeowner shot and killed one of the two individuals breaking into the house.
According to Sheriff Tom Templeton, at approximately 3 a.m. Sunday, the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Police were notified of an alleged home invasion at a residence south of Earlville on County Highway 1. Reportedly, two suspects entered the residence at which time the homeowner, Joel V. Contreras, 47, shot one of the armed suspects twice with a pistol. The suspect was transported by Earlville Ambulance to Mendota Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room.
The other suspect fled in a vehicle, described as being a small car, which was dark in color. Sheriff’s police put out the description to local law enforcement agencies. Ottawa Police stopped a vehicle matching the description on the north side of Ottawa, at which time the suspect, Marcus E. Samarripa, 24, of Turlock, Calif., was taken into custody and charged with home invasion.
Upon further investigation at the rural Earlville residence of Contreras, sheriff’s police found cannabis growing in the basement. They then took custody of Contreras and charged him with production of cannabis plants.
The identity of the deceased is not yet being released, pending positive identification and notification of the next of kin. An autopsy was conducted Monday.
The LaSalle County Coroner’s office, LaSalle County State’s Attorney’s office and the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services are assisting the sheriff’s police with the continuing investigation.
