Priorities. Examine Them.

Granny: Mom of baby found near gun doesn’t deserve trouble

A Lynn grandmother busted in a drug raid on Friday defended her daughter yesterday after cops reported that the daughter’s 6-month-old son was found sitting on a mattress with a loaded handgun tucked under it.

“She’s a very good mother. That baby means the world to her, but now (the Department of Children & Families) is in her life,” said a woman who answered the phone at the raided home and identified herself as grandmother Virginia Suggs.

This just boggles my mind, it really does. The issue isn't that the mother was living in a house with rampant drug dealing going on, but that there was a loaded gun under a mattress. They're investigating whether it's a safe enough environment for the child over the presence of an inanimate object vs. a host of folks committing crimes.

Are we really this backward? Isn't this medieval thinking along the lines of drill holes in the patient's head to let the evil spirits out? We need to investigate removing this infant because there's this eeeeevil thing in the house, not because there are evil people there? I just don't understand it.

Also, let's review the complete and utter gun control failure present here. MA requires a permit - that is subject to the whim of the police chief - to simply own that handgun. Any guesses as to whether that was the case? MA requires that all firearms be stored in a locked container when not under the direct control of the licensed owner - again, a mattress hardly qualifies as a locked container. In one of the most restrictive states in the country, a criminal took possession of a firearm and stored it in an illegal manner.

But just one more law would change this, right? Isn't that the battle cry of the forces aligned against freedom? All we need is one more law in place for the children? The NRA wants all babies to have access to Magnum-power handguns, isn't that the gist of how they'll frame this? The NRA is directly responsible for placing that gun under that mattress, and then putting the baby on top of it? (Side note: Wonder if the sumdood arrested in the same room actually put the baby over the gun hoping it would keep the cops from finding it?)

We focus on the tool, rather than the criminal, to our detriment.

That is all.

Inanimate objects are the about the only thing left that you can single out as the cause of all the world's ills and not be subject to the shrill cry of "racist!".
