MArooned Product Review: Crimson Trace Laser Grips, Ruger LCR

I try my hand at another video review, this time showing the ease of use of the Crimson Trace Laser Sight Grips on a Ruger LCR.

I know, I know, FateofDestinee I ain't (she has much better hair), but I'm working on it - notice the slick looking background (that looks suspiciously like a flat sheet pinned to my living room curtains) and the quality script (okay, I'm making that part up). I still have to work on the delivery and not bobbing my head like a pigeon, but I'm starting to get the hang of this video thing. I can certainly understand the appeal - what took me a minute and 50 seconds to cover in a video would have taken a dozen pictures and multiple paragraphs.

For this review, especially, I think the video was key. It's hard to appreciate just how incredibly intuitive and instinctive the Crimson Trace Laser Sight Grips are to use until you actually see them in action. As I mention in the video, you literally pick the firearm up and the laser sight is active - it's just that simple. There are no switches to flip; you do not take any part of your hand off the grip; you pick up the firearm and the laser is on. Put it down, the laser is off. It cannot get any simpler than that.

Thanks to Crimson Trace for providing these grips for review!

That is all.

I didn't realize the CT laser grips activated when you held the grip. I've shied away from lasers because the ones I've seen either had a switch you had to operate from a non-shooting grasp (which I guarantee I'd forget to turn off), or a strap-on pressure switch that felt like a wad of duct tape.

Your head movement isn't as bad later in the vid. Maybe consider doing a short piece like this one twice in a row, and then edit it down? By the time you're done with the first take you're used to talking to the camera and you have a clearer idea of what you want to say, so the second time through should be smoother.

It's nice watching a gun video where the host doesn't sound like one of my Appalachian relatives. Thanks!

Dave,

That's why I thought this would make an excellent video, actually. If you haven't had the opportunity to actually try out the Crimson Trace grips, you might not realize just how intuitive they are.

Now, that said, one of the hardest things for me to get over was the realization that laser sight != single ragged hole in the center of the target. The laser helps - definitely - but if you're jerking the trigger with iron sights, you're jerking the trigger with a laser sight. There's nothing that Crimson Trace can do about that!

I probably should break it up into smaller portions, as well as write out a script before hand so I know what I want to say.

I'll keep working on it, that's for sure!

And heh. I thought about doing the whole bit in Masshole: "Well, you gotcha laysah sight heah"...

I know being able to see the target is just the start. That's why I signed up for an Appleseed shoot - to get the bullet the rest of the way there.

On the right people East Coast accents are endearing, like the lady I work with from Newton. Or Bugs Bunny.

Just watch the Uh's. When I edit them out of recordings it makes the people sound a lot more intelligent!

You sound way different here than the squirrel show. Less headroom.

How do the lasergrips handle recoil compared to the Hogue grips that come on the gun?

Ben,

I haven't gotten it to the range yet but that'll definitely be one of the things I'm looking at. The Hogue Tamer grips do a great job of helping smooth out the recoil, especially from the +P loads. It will be interesting to see how the CT grips handle the same recoil.
