I know this will come as a shock, but Comcast is out. Again. We've been having problems here at the house for coming up on a month now. They sent a technician out to the house, who diagnosed the problem as our router. Big shock. Given that the router was ~ 4 years old, I went out and bought a new router - seemed to make sense. Well, it was all of a day before we were back to having internet problems - and I've put our laptop in the office connected directly to the modem to absolutely rule out the router as the issue.
It's gotten progressively worse over the past month - twice in the past week I've called for service only to get the recording that they are experiencing "higher than normal call volume" and to call back unless the call was of an urgent nature. Um, hello? You provide f**king entertainment, nothing else - what "urgent" is there for me to call about? My cable is out? My internet? Neither of those are emergencies in any sense of the word.
What is interesting to note, though, is that while the phone and internet will go out on a regular basis, the cable *never* goes out. Ever. It's always there working just fine. Could it be perhaps that the cable has actual competition, and that's the one place they know they can lose customers? Comcast is the only high-speed internet service in my area, so if we want to leave Comcast, we go back to dial-up - or pay for satellite. Of course, when the service is down on what is getting to be a daily basis, perhaps dial-up would be faster...
The *instant* Verizon brings FiOS here I am flushing Comcast.
That is all.

Can you get Directv? We ditched Comcast 5 years ago for a Verizon/Directv bundle. FIOS is more cost effective, but the bundle was still cost competitve with Comcast.
Nobody does WISP out there?
Hope you get FIOS soon. We go it, dumped Comcast and never looked back

Bread and circuses, Jay. Bread. And. Circuses. Oh, and wine.
Brad is right...
Without a doubt, Comcast sucks. My router died earlier this week (only 1 year old). The keep jacking the prices up for service and trying to peddle more add-ons.
Jay, as a user of satellite based internet, I'd have to recommend against it. Every provider we've checked into since getting HughesNet is pretty much the same. Either they have a monthly data limit or they have a limit in some other span of time. Hughes has a 425Mb daily limit but has the advantage of allowing a 5 hour window post midnight til early morning that is unlimited. Also, all the satellite providers seem to cost double what cable or DSL does. Hope that helps.
Yep there's a reason why the Drug Soma had such a prominent roll in "A Brave New World".
Internet and phone are active pursuits, TV is passive, and they want you sitting right there not thinking about how awesome FIOS is.
I'm glad to live in a country with a high amount of options. I've got $50 a month unlimited 100/10mbit fibreoptic.
Somehow I have been lucky. I've been with Comcast for probably over 20 years and can count on one hand the times that any part of it went out (we have TV and internet).
Ice storms in 2008 that took out power with the power lines and cable lines ripped off the house and laying on the ground? Hooked up the generator had cable and interet.
Sorry you are having such troubles!
Then again, it might not be Comcast, it might be much more sinister, lie the DHS, orthe TSA messing with you. Got tinfoil??
At least y'all might eventualloy *get* FIOS. A couple years back Qwest was mass-mailing about how the area was going "fiber" Real Soon Now - subsequently, they were bought out by another company which has no intentions of FIOS, from what I understand, and the city has monopoly agreements with Comcast (yecch) and Qwest.
Sigh. If I move thirty-odd miles east into Idaho, I can get Verizion (not sure about FIOS, but having Verizion *available* makes it better odds.)
Hi there - I work for Comcast. I can reach out to my contacts to look into the problem. Please feel free to contact me.
I apologize for the trouble.

Jay - I'm not sure I'd be so quick to go to Verizon. Their customer service sucks every bit as much as does that of Comcast, and if you ever decide to drop them, it'll just about take a cease-and-desist letter, a lawyer's name, and a lawsuit ready to file, for them to quit billing your account. My wife had Verizon prior to us getting married - it took about five or six months of -constant- phone calls, complaints, and fraud complaints for them to stop. She says the service itself wasn't that bad, but if you go that route, plan on a real fight if and when you ever drop them.
To "Mark Casem" purportedly of Comcast -
Your internet service sucks, and your television is reliable only in comparison; if we had a company around able to provide cable internet with real customer service and actual -internet- instead of the lag, interrupted connections, and outages of Comcast, we'd drop you faster than a lit firework. Unfortunately, your "industry" is one of the few legal monopolies still around, and satellite and Verizon both suck worse. I wish I had something good to say on your behalf, but I don't.
