Gun-group raises funds from buy-back event
(CHICAGO) -- A gun group is using its payout from Chicago's annual gun buy-back event to send children to a shooting camp -- a move that has been criticized by the city's police department.
Approximately 60 guns and several BB guns were given to police by the Champaign-based gun group Guns Save Life during the gun buy-back last week, the Chicago Sun-Times reports (http://bit.ly/MhqXuI).The bleating is hysterical. The police officials running the event honestly expect us to believe that they think gang members will turn in their illegal firearms at these events. Now, I don't know about the rest of y'all, but the only firearms I have ever seen at these "buybacks" are either rusty old piles of sh*t, pot metal crap, or the occassional war trophy. I don't know that I've ever seen a single polymer handgun on one of the "junk on the bunk" shots...
The group, Guns Save Life, raised over $6,000, with which they purchased BB guns and training rifles and sent kids to NRA-sponsored firearms camps. Folks, this will do 100X more good towards reducing gun violence than any "buyback" program ever dreamed of doing. There's 100 kids going to a camp to learn about handling firearms safely - that's 100 kids that will, at the very least, know better than to pick up a firearm and point it at a playmate.

Yep, and the 'big' problem is they will NOT be allowed back... They're taking 'unfair' advantage of the system...
Actually, I'll bet a lot of gang members and criminals turn in illegal firearms at these events. How better to get rid of a gun than wipe the prints off and anonymously drop it off at a police collection site?
If you've used the gun in a crime, there is now zero chance it'll be found in your car or apartment and there's no chance it can be linked to you.
Why couldn't an enterprising guy set up a table just upstream from the gun buy back and offer more money for good guns?
I've always wondered about that. A hundred miles or so up the road, they did a buy back were offering $50 per gun turned in. Why not set up a table offering 75 or $100, if you think the gun is worth it.

A few weeks ago The Firearm Blog ran a post about an artist in NYC who discovered it was more lucrative to manufacture zip guns to sell to the city's buyback program than to display them as part of his art.
