Winter Storm Luna Takes Aim on Northeast
A shield of snow, sleet and freezing rain will pivot through the northern Great Lakes and Northeast today, including New York City, Philadelphia and D.C. Some light icing accumulations may lead to travel issues from northern Lower Michigan, Pennsylvania, southern New York and parts of southern New England.ZOMG! It's winter and we're getting some form of frozen precipitation! Quick, break out the nomenclature apparatus! I mean, really, a storm that drops freezing rain and some snow on parts of New York and New England gets its own name? We've had years where we'd easily have to drop into Aardvark and Bburago for this sort of event.
Used to be, we'd name hurricanes only. As the hurricane hit land and wound down, it's status would be dropped down to tropical storm, but it would keep the name - I think we're seeing mission creep here. Next we started naming tropical storms. Then blizzards. Now we're tossing names at whatever storm happens to waltz up the jet stream or come lolling in from Canada.
Eventually, everything will be named Elvis...

Really. A blizzard is just a blizzard. You deal with it.
But Jay, didn't ya'know that until we invented soot factories and mobile smog machines, the climate was idyllic with nary a sever weather event or even a lightning strike. Before then, snow just magically appeared on the ground outside Messrs. Currier and Ives' office for the express purpose of being rendered in print.
Fortunately, it's only the Weather Channel that's perpetrating this silliness. Unfortunately, it's the Weather Channel that's perpetrating this silliness, and a lot of people get their weather information from their website now, instead of from local tv forecasters or the National Weather Service (which has not jumped on board with naming winter storms), so the silliness spreads.
Our local weather guru (about the only good thing in our local liberal rag) had a good rant about this a couple of months ago.
I was commenting on this to hubby the other day. I don't get it....
It's laziness. I mean, c'mon, it's easier to say "Storm Luna" than it is "weather system affecting the Great Lakes and Northeast", right?

It's to boost the Weather Channel's ratings. The Germans have named major storm systems for years, but the US govt does not (and should not, IMHO).

Are they charging people to let them name storms yet? That's the next step. They've been taking money from people to let them anme stars for years.
Back in Texas we named severe storms all the time. But we're not very imaginative, so we named them all Spring.
Yes, it's stupid, but I was really bummed we didn't get anything significant out of the last storm, though. I wanted to stand out on my porch, first raised angrily into the air and shout KAAAAAAAHHHHHHHNNNNNNN!!!

Hopefully no one at NOAA will think it's a good idea.
