Bus Driver Crashed Into Auburn Home On First Day In Service
AUBURN, Mass. (AP) — The man driving a regional transit bus that crashed into a house in central Massachusetts earlier this week was on his first day of service.
Francis Artey, 27, of Worcester, was driving the Worcester Regional Transit Authority bus that cut across a lawn and slammed into a house in Auburn on Monday, the Telegram & Gazette reported Thursday. They're quick to point out that this was not his first day on the job, but his first day driving this bus. He's been trained, etc. and had driven a school bus before this with no accidents to his record. They're still trying to piece together what happened, as it does not appear that he applied the brakes before hitting the house at 38 MPH. No one was seriously injured, although the driver did suffer some fractures and cuts.
Now, I've driven a 36 foot RV, which is approximately the same size and heft as a bus, and it's no easy feat. While it's tempting to theorize what might have happened that would have led to the bus crashing into a house at essentially full speed (I'd doubt that the bus travels much more than that other than short sprints on the Pike), without knowing the whole story it's nothing more than conjecture. It's entirely possible that a mechanical problem resulted in the crash.
I just hope he wasn't texting like the MBTA subway operators...
That is all.

Perhaps the floor mat got stuck under the brake pedal and depressed the accelerator pedal like it did for all those elderly Toyota drivers a few years back.
Motor vehicle accidents are like "accidental" discharges: most of them are results of negligence, with a true accident being caused by mechanical failure being extremely rare.
If it's not a mechanical failure, my guess would be a seizure of some kind, but that's just a guess.
