Controversy, Thy Name Is...

...Gun Nuts...

The Top Five rifles of all time? Heh. Nope, no controversy THERE! For the record, the top five are the AK-47, the Winchester 94*, the FN/FAL, the K-98 Mauser, and the M1 Garand. Heh.

Tune in, tonight at 9:00 PM EST. There will be drama...

That is all.

*Okay, okay. Good point on the Winchester vs. Marlin 336...

Put that M1 Garand as number one on that list!

See Ya

Sheesh. I agree with the Garand, the Mauser 98, and MAYBE the AK ... but why the Marlin 336 instead of a Win94? And where's the classics - Martinis, 10/22, Nylon66, etc??

I could agree with that if you replace the FAL with the M14.

Did it MY way,

Garand's definitely #1. No doubt about that - who am I to argue with General Patton?

ZerCool,

Real simple on the 336 - I have one, not the Win. And the Marlin's still in production, not gone the way of the dodo...

And while the Martini rifle is a classic, it's nowhere near as earth-shattering as design as the five listed. AK47 - mass-produced, cheap arms; Marlin 336 (any lever, really) - first rapid repeater; FN?FAL - freedom's right arm!; Mauser - most copied action EVAH; and Garand - the most perfect battle implement ever devised...

Eseell,

Since the M14 is little more than a Garand with a detachable mag, I don't consider it different enough for it's own entry. Otherwise I'd have to have an '03 Springfield on the list (which is essentially a K98 Mauser)...

Red Ryder BB gun. Obvious omission. Finger of Shame.

I'd agree with everything except the Marlin as well. Own it or not, you HAVE to replace it with the Winchester 94. An even better choice in my book would be "that damn Yankee rifle that they load on Sunday and shoot all week!"; the original Henry repeating rifle
Too bad I wont be able to listen to gun nuts radio tonight, but I'll be with a whole room full of gun nuts at the monthly Connecticut Citizens Defense League meeting, so I hope I'm excused.

1. M1 Garand Patton be damned, I'm not gonna argue with 3 uncles and father-in-law.
2. Winchester 1895 Just to be contrary. JMB goodness in .30-06
3. Mauser of the Swedish variety.
4. SMLE Almost as indestructible as an AK.
5. AK Can’t argue with success.

I'm with Stretch. I'd put the SMLE on the list instead of the FAL. Not the Right Hand Of Freedom, but the Rifle of Empire.

And suddenly, there was Jay, stepping in with his entry for the 2009 "Did he really say that award?"

...by mentioning the carcano on a show about the top 5 rifles. Then he gave his reasoning and made sense.

This is my list they may not be the best but they are my dream guns they all have character.
Also I have never shot any of the guns on the the list so my opinion may change with experiance but I have never driven a Porsche or Astin Martin either but I can dream.
5.AK-47 I just works not the prettiest or most accurate but it just works the Jeep of the firearms world.
4.Hawkins .50 Jermiah Johnson nuff said
3.M1 Carbine Small lightweight easy to shoot
2.M14 the gun the M1 should have been
1.)Lever gun Torn between the 94 and the 336.94 has nostalgia 336 has better ergonomics and side eject.I have always had a soft spot for lever guns since I got a 94 clone for a BB gun when I was little.

Keith, still higher class than the IRC chat afterwards. {chuckle}

Rick, I never said anything about the class, I just wished I'd thought of something that hilarious. Milk came out my nose, I kid you not.

Your list is good, though some of the comments are not. The M14 or Mini-14? That's just a decedent of the Garand. The FAL is a good call.

A top 5 list is tough, because it leaves a lot out. If I were to add a couple of guns, I'd definitely have to add the Lee-Enfield and the Mosin-Nagant.
