In the Department of "Hold My Beer & Watch This"...

Proving that rednecks are not limited to the United States is this story out of Canada:

Man mauled by tiger after scaling Calgary Zoo fences
(CNN) -- A Siberian Tiger mauled a man Monday morning after he and a friend scaled the fence of the Calgary Zoo and pressed up against the tiger cage, zoo officials said.

"The information we have is that while his injuries appear not to be life-threatening. They are, however, quite serious," Graham Netwon, the zoo's director and chief financial officer, said at a news conference Monday.

Officials said two men scaled the zoo's 8-foot perimeter fence, which also is covered in barbed wire, about 1 a.m. Monday morning.

How's that saying go? Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Now, it can pretty safely be assumed that drugs and/or alcohol played a part in this, as I have a hard time imagining that someone would deliberately antagonize a tiger whilst sober. Then again, people have done dumber things...

But becoming a human scratching post for the world's largest kitteh has to rank pretty high on the "Dumbass-O-Meter"...

That is all.

You know, the authorities ought to DO something to keep people from jumping the fence like that.

I have an idea! They could put a dangerous animal inside the enclosure and it could act as a deterrent for the otherwise adventurous!

A similar stunt happened up here when an Aussie tourist decided she wanted to play with Binky, our polar bear at the Anchorage zoo. She may have been the first bite out of stupid he took, but not the last...

Sadly, when our well-loved icon died, they didn't follow popular suggestion and stuff & mount him in the airport terminal - with the bloody sneaker in his mouth...

Aphun & Oreo's new enclosure is supposedly idiot-proof. We're all waiting to see if the world builds a better idiot.

Playing with predators at the zoo is unwise yes. (I'm aware of the understatement).

Petting tigers is quite an experience though, they really love bellyrubs. But I only know of one place in the world where you can do so with relative safety... they haven't had any maulings yet at least, and there's a daily stream of tourists, so the risk seemed low enough for me to try it. Powerful stuff.
