Job Opening: One Klansman

Your employer: The Democratic Party.

Robert Byrd, longest-serving member of Congress, dead at 92
Washington(CNN) -- West Virginia Sen. Robert Byrd, the self-educated son of a coal miner who became the longest-serving member of Congress, died early Monday at age 92, the senator's office said.

Byrd, a nine-term Democrat, was known as a master of the chamber's often-arcane rules and as the self-proclaimed "champion of the Constitution," a jealous guardian of congressional power.

Further down in the article deifying Byrd, they do actually make mention of his time in the Klan - that he:
blamed "that Southern atmosphere in which I grew up, with all of its prejudices and its feelings," for his opposition to equal rights, which included joining the Ku Klux Klan in the 1940s.
See? It's the South's fault Byrd "joined" the Klan. I wasn't aware that the South caused him to become a Grand Kleagle in the Klan - "Kleagle" being a recruiter paid to bring people into the Klan. He wasn't just some po' boy who joined up because he didn't know what he was getting himself into, or that he got swept up and joined in the heat of the moment. You don't become a recruiter for the KKK by accident.

But you know what? Kennedy left in 2009 and now Byrd in 2010. If this is Ă˜bama's change, then this is change I can believe in... One can only wonder how West Virginia will honor their native son as they lay him to rest: do they bring him back to WV on Robert Byrd Highway? If they divert the funeral procession to cross every Robert Byrd bridge it could take weeks to get him home...

Rest in peace, Senator Byrd - and say hi to Ted Kennedy when you reach your final resting place.

That is all.

Robert Byrd represented WV in much the same manner that Bob Dole represented Kansas or Liddy Dole represented NC: a means to an end so that each could live in DC.

92's a pretty good life. That we should all be as fortunate.

I wonder if there's a bridge or a highway named after him down there...

The sad thing is that the Dem Governor gets to appoint someone to fill out his term, which don't expire until Jan 2013. The only thing that will matter is how PRO-COAL the new Senator will be. Everything else, he or she will be in lockstep with the Obammy Regime. Wonder how many times Rahm Emmanuel is hitting the redial on his phone call to the Governor?

I grew up in the deep South, in much the same atmosphere... and I'm not a Klansman. Does this mean that one day I'll wake up and I'll magically be wearing a robe and hood? Oh noes, the horror!

UNpossible! But West Virginia is the abolitionist part of Virginia that seceeded from Virginia so they wouldn't be part of the racist Confederacy, I thought. . . or so all the school text books told me. Just like Maryland and Delaware, West-By-God-Virginia (but strangely enough, UNLIKE Kentucky) isn't really a Southern state since 1861.

Right, the "Southern culture" (of shich his home state is about as much of as Kansas or SE Ohio is) forced him to join the Klan, work as a paid official of said terrorist organization, and oppose ALL civil rights all the way to the point where it was impossible to get DNC support and still be an OVERTLY racist politician, whilst teh Republicans were still powerless in WV and wouldn't have him afterwards.

I'm sorry -- I looked at teh half-masted flags and the only real thought I had was, "Gee. . . another dead terrorist. . . "

I am glad that this shithead is dead.

What was his contribution to the USA?

hmm well:

One of congressmen that tried to filibusterer the civil rights act.

Leader in the movment to expand "section 8" housing under the idea that you could "keep the lower class in one place"

Leader in pro-abortion laws with the idea that "it makes sure that people do reproduce a lesser worthy child"

The saddest part about this is the fact that no one put a bullet in his head
