Patriotism From Unexpected Sources...

Commenter and blogshoot attendee Ross sent me this video. You might recognize the singer...

Yep, that's Gene Simmons of Kiss fame leading soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines in their respective songs. He finishes up with a rendition of "God Bless America" that is, in my opinion, one of the finest ever rendered. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines are all represented (it was filmed in Iraq, so presumably there would be scant Coast Guard presence). If this doesn't give you goosebumps, I don't want to know you.

Thank you, each and every one of you that puts on a uniform to keep us all free and safe. God bless you all.

That is all.

*Ahem*

My cousin Dave, who is in the Coast Guard Reserve, has done at least one tour in Iraq. He was out there doing ship inspections, looking for contraband coming in. AFAIK, he was trying to get sent out for a second tour, too.

So yes, the Coast Guard gets to share in the "fun".

(BTW, his big brother Gary, a retired Navy Chief, fondly refers to Dave as a "puddle jumper". Me, I'm still trying to figure out how a kid who moved to Oklahoma when he was 14 decides to join the Coast Guard in his 30's...)

Damn straight.

Yes, as Ross said first, there are indeed Coasties in Iraq. They run ship inspections and I believe they contribute a lot of coxswains and other small-boat-crew positions.

But I don't even know if the Coast Guard has a theme song, much less what it is. It certainly isn't as well known as any of the four major service songs.

Jay I don'[t think it was filmed in Iraq.It was part of his A&E Show Family Jewels and I believe it was filmed in California. It is also a couple of years old.Doesn't make it less great but thought I would give you the facts

Thanks for posting this! Chaos (one of my twins) said, after watching, "This makes me proud to be an American!"

America, one of the few countries where it's cool to be patriotic!

Unless you're a guilt-ridden libtard who has partaken of the Koolaid.

cybrus,

Thanks. It really was too good not to share.

Ross & wolfwalker,

Hence why I said "scant" and not "no" or "none"... :)

Old NFO,

Thanks. I was pleasantly surprised to see Mr. Simmons in such a positive role. He's been portrayed as a bit of an arrogant cad given his proclivities at the peak of his fame; it's good to see he has a redeeming side as well.

BenC,

Thanks for the update - the e-mail I received stated that it was from Iraq. Perhaps they meant troops destined for or returning from Iraq...

Christina,

Yeah, that was about my reaction, too.

And heh WRT libtard...

I suddenly have nothing but the utmost respect for the KISS Army. Thanks for all you do guys.

I am, however, dissapointed that I am the only one to make a KISS Army comment.

"Semper Paratus" is the USCG song.

Maybe not so unexpected. According to Wiki, Simmons was born Chaim Witz in Israel, 1948. His mother and uncle were the only family survivors of the Holocaust.
