This Could Get Interesting...

Church plans to picket rocker Dio's memorial service
Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- A public memorial service for heavy metal rocker Ronnie James Dio is planned for Sunday, with members of the Westboro Baptist Church saying they will picket the ceremony.

The church in Topeka, Kansas, is known for its intolerance of gays and its picketing of soldiers' funerals.

A picketing schedule on the church's website said protesters will be at the Dio memorial at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles, accusing the 67-year-old rocker of worshipping Satan.

Hmmm. Something tells me that metal fans will be significantly less, well, reserved than the families of our fallen soldiers. It fills me with a warm and fuzzy feeling inside to think of these tiny-brained losers getting the stuffing stomped out of them by a couple dozen angry metalheads.

Not that we here at MArooned condone violence against those that most desperately deserve it...

That is all.

That's actually exactly what they're hoping for.

This "church" basically consists of the extended family of the lead whacko who shall remain nameless here.

About half of them are attorneys.

Their entire schtick is to be as controversial as possible in hopes of getting someone to give them the butt-whupping they so richly deserve...so they can them sue them in civil court for all they're worth.

They get the double whammy of press exposre (Their primary goal) and income for them to perpetuate their cult.

The best thing that can happen is for them to be ignored. Every mention in the news feeds them.

That's why they've pretty much stopped protesting at Vets funerals. Just announcing that they're going to do so is enough to get them the press coverage they crave, even though they generally don't show up any more.

They don't get what they want out of the event itself becuase the Patriot guard shuts them down...strictly non-violently...and protects the family of the fallen from their vile vitriole. The bikers prevent any untoward altercations with the family and any press coverage typically focuses on them, rather than the cultists so the freaks just don't even bother to show up any more.

They still "protest" but they choose venues where they can get maximum shock value while not being blocked by the PGR.

They really don't like us.

Anyway, sorry for the diatribe, the bottom line is that, in a just world it would be perfectly legal to thrash these people to within an inch of their lives...the first amendment says we're guaranteed freedom of speech, not freedom from the consequences of that speech...but that would be playing right into their hands.

I'd much prefer for them to just be ignored and to fade into the obscurity they so richly deserve and desperately fear...but I'm afraid it won't happen as long as this cult continues to purport to be Christian and the media can use them as a whipping boy against the religion.

Curt,

You are, of course, 100% correct. They would love nothing more than the legal and socio-political ramifications of victimhood brought on by physical violence. As the better people here, we should strive above all to deny them that which they desperately seek.

That said, there's a small part of me that would really like to see these douchebags get pounded into paste...

There's a very large part of me that would really like to see these douchebags get pounded into paste.

Personally, I have yet to see any incidences where the folks attending the funeral went on an ass-kicking spree. I'm hoping for it, personally. Those bastards cross a line with me. I'll be cheering.

As far as civil suits go? Well, there's a lot of metalheads out there that barely own anything past their DIO CDs. Just sayin...

I agree with what should be the "bigger man" course of action; don't get me wrong. I just have a real strong desire to these morons scatter or get shit-hammered by a bunch of metalheads.

Heavy metal, eh?

_I_ have this mental image of somebody rolling up in a rockmobile with warp-powered speakers and loosing a high-volume blast of heavy metal "music" that deafens the Westboro vermin. Permanently.

Actually that is a good way to deal with it. Line up a few cars with killer sound and open the doors and run them up. Don't touch the protesters
and that be that. Can't hear them all the better. Better yet if all the heavy metal groupies just lined up with their backs to the erstwhile protesters. Can't see them.

That give them all of the nothing they can't use. Sets a nonviolent pattern
for everyone else and makes it hard even for the "news" to get a story they can't hear and has no action.
